If you are feeling persistent pain in your lower back, the first thing you want to do is visit your doctor in order to get a diagnosis for the problem. After your diagnosis has been completed you will then want to look over the different types of treatments available for back pain.

Most problems involving back pain can be treated in a moderate way, while certain conditions may require you to have surgery. Most patients suffering from back pain will begin feeling relief two weeks after beginning treatment.

Some of the methods used in correcting back pain are very basic. You may only be required to rest or exercise while undergoing physical therapy. More advanced treatments may include acupuncture or chiropractic help. Your doctor will be able to give you a list of treatments for different types of back pain.

When you have pain in your back, you should be able to get pain relief. Many doctors prescribe medications to their patients in order to reduce pain. Pills taken orally such as aspirin and other medication which don't require prescriptions are often used.

If this isn't strong enough, doctors will often begin prescribing opioids. These usually add to the medicine you're already taking, and are usually ingested in the form of codeines. Sometimes stronger opioids such as morphine are used. Sometimes patients may experience undesireable side effects when taking medications for back pain.

Patients with severe back pain may also need to undergo physical therapy. Some forms of physical therapy are more passive thant others. Getting back massages and applying heat are cold objects to the back generally only work the first few weeks after suffering a back injury. After this patients begin doing active forms of physical therapy such as correcting their posture and other forms of exercise.

Another important treatment for back pain is psychological therapy. Back pain often causes large amounts of stress due to the fact people suffering aren't able conduct everyday activities. Some people may not be able to work and be employed in the types of jobs they enjoy doing. Psychologists will often counsel patients in order to help them cope with and manage the stress they have.

Backpain and ESI are related to each other in that the latter is very often used to find out the true cause of the former. Back ache is a common phenomenon and is generally a result of a strain or injury to the muscles and ligaments supporting the human spine. An Epidural Steroid Injection or ESI is the most common type of injection given to patients suffering from back and neck pain. The pain in the back can be constant or intermittent and its intensity may vary from a dull ache to a searing feeling.

In a large number of cases, back pain vanishes or can be cured within a few weeks. However, in cases of chronic pain, medical advice is necessary. Patients having difficulty in passing urine or experiencing numbness in the back or genital area or weakness and pain in the legs or feeling unsteady while standing should see a physician immediately. Spinal injections are often used to find out the true cause of the back pain and than to actually treat the pain. Injections which provide temporary relief are called therapeutic injections. In other cases spinal injections are used to diagnose the cause of the back pain. ESI is generally injection used to treat back pain.

The space between the covering of the spinal cord and the inside of the bony spinal canal is called the epidural space. An injection in this area ensures that the medication moves across the whole of the spine and covers all the nerve routs and joints to relieve the back pain. ESIs are generally very effective in the treatment and the true diagnosis of the back pain.

In most of the cases where spinal injections are used, a local anesthetic called Lidocaine is used. Lidocaine is a fast acting drug and its effects wear off in a couple of hours. So it is generally used as a diagnostic tool. Bupivacaine, another anesthetic is used to provide some relief from the back pain. Another commonly used injection is Cortisone. Cortisone is commonly injected with a local anesthetic to reduce inflammation in the affected areas of the patient suffering from severe back pain.

An epidural steroid injection or ESI can be injected in three different ways. In the first case a caudal block is placed through the sacral gap which is the space below our lumbar spine. Than the injection is placed into the epidural space. This type of block reduces the chances of puncturing the dura.

The most common method of giving an ESI to reduce back pain is the Tran lumbar approach. Under this method the needle is placed between vertebrae from the back. The third method is generally used for diagnostic purposes. The transforaminal approach involves injection of the medication around a specific nerve root to find out the exact problem area. The foraminae are small openings between your vertebrae through which the nerve roots exit the spinal canal and enter the body.

Spinal injections should not be used in the case of patients taking a platelet-inhibiting drug, such as aspirin or NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).

And the good news, fried foods, and chocolate do not cause acne!

Acne, or pimples, usually starts in the early teens when the oil glands in the body start making more sebum (oil). Approximately 85% of teens and pre-teens - along with many adults get acne. It is so common that it is considered a normal part of growing up. Acne predominately appears on the face, and sometimes on the back, shoulders and chest. Acne can be heredity,and girls usually get it at a younger age than boys.

Teens get acne because of hormone changes that come with puberty - not because of what they are eating! However, acne is not uncommon to have in your 30's and 40's.

A 'whitehead' results when the hair follicle, or pore, gets plugged up with oil, dead skin cells or germs. If the pore remains open the air touches it and turns it black - it then becomes a 'blackhead'. A blackhead is not caused by dirt.

Acne can be exacerbated by: menstruating; stress; contraception pills that contain male hormones; oily cosmetics; working in hot humid places or with oil or grease; some types of medicines; or hormone changes during pregnancy.

Having acne can affect one's self esteem and body image. This can manifest in numerous ways including: the person growing their hair long and keeping it over their face; by avoiding eye contact; always keeping their body hidden; taking sick days - and missing work or study. Acne can bring on loss of appetite, lethargy, mood swings, crying and sleep issues.

There are lots of acne treatments - some tried and true - and some not - these include: benzoyl peroxide; a course of antibiotics - for severe cases; for some females who may be producing excessive hormones - birth control pills; retinoids eg Retin-A - via prescription; acne creams and cleansers; laser treatments and herbal treatments. With most of these it can take several weeks before you notice any change.

Acne scaring has in the past been of a major concern to a lot of people - there is, however, a new laser treatment for acne scars. The laser treats the damaged skin - resurfacing it, leaving healthy skin unaffected - the laser goes deep into the acne scars - causing collagen remodelling. The procedure is a walk-in, walk-out treatment. It usually takes 4 - 5 treatments for best results.

Colon cleansing is the process of removing toxins from your body. More specifically it is the act of flushing out the toxins with water. It may seem like a painful and uncomfortable experience, but the health benefits far outweigh any temporary discomfort. I've put together this list of 4 tips to help you with your first Colon Cleansing.

1) You want to research about colon cleansing online. Learn all you can about it, because although you may think it's for you it just might not be. There are licensed facilities that will do the colon cleansing for you or you may opt to do it yourself with herbs. Either way you should be prepared by doing the proper research.

2) If doing a colon cleansing in a licensed facility please follow their rules. They will probably not have you eat for 12-24 hours before the procedure and will most likely ask you to drink lots of water instead. Water helps with the cleansing process and pure water will be used during the actual cleansing. Be prepared to immediately use the restroom when your cleansing is complete. It is just a part of the detoxification process. There is no need to feel embarassed as this is completely normal.

3) If doing a home colon cleansing follow the instructions carefully. Usually a home herbal cleanse takes place over 30 days by taking herbal pills. What will happen is the first few days will probably be pretty uncomfortable for you. You'll be using the restroom up to 5 times per day. If this doesn't slow down then you should take less of the herbal pills so as not to dehydrate your body. To help with hydration drink, at minimum, your body weight in ounces of water. So if you weigh 120 pounds, drink 120 ounces of water per day. That may be difficult, but water is healthy and it will help with the cleansing process.

4) While going through the discomfort just remember that you're doing something great for your body and will feel much better once the process is complete. No pain no gain certainly holds true for colon cleansing. Althoug there should be no actual pain, just some discomfort.

Welcome to the Gourmet Chicken Series. Today we bring you Moroccan Chicken.

Moroccan cuisine is considered as one of the most diverse cuisines around the globe. The reason is because due to Morocco;s interaction with the outside world throughout time. The cuisine of Morocco is a mix of Berber, Moorish, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and African cuisines. The cooks in the royal kitchens of Fez, Meknes, Marrakech, Rabat and Tetouan refined Moroccan cuisine over the centuries and created the basis for what is known as Moroccan cuisine today.

2 tbsp. butter
2 tbsp. vegetable oil
2 Broiler-fryers cut into pieces
2 chopped medium onions
1 chopped clove garlic
1 cup ground almonds
1 tbsp. dried basil
1/2 tsp. pepper
1/2 cup honey
1-1/2 cups of chicken broth
2 tbsp. corn starch
1 lemon for juice

1. In a casserole heat butter and vegetable oil and brown chicken.
2. Season with salt and pepper and remove.
3. In the remaining fat cook onions and garlic until translucent.
4. Add next 4 ingredients, cook over gentle heat stirring until well mixed.
5. Combine the broth and corn starch and add to the contents of the casserole over high heat.
6. Cook and stir sauce thickens.
7. Remove from heat and stir in lemon juice.
8. Replace chicken, spooning sauce over chicken.
9. Bake in covered preheat oven at 350� for 1 hour.

Below I will provide you with a short history of Wheatgrass and why people have now decided to start drinking its juice.

At the start of the 1900's a man called Edmund Bordeaux Szekely found an ancient biblical manuscript and which he then translated. What was so remarkable about this discovery was that when he had translated the document, Szekely decided to form a society called the Biogenic Society which would teach other people this new/old way of eating. Firstly he would publish what he had translated on the document in to little books and sold very cheaply as he wanted the world to know what he had found. The book was called �The Essene Gospel of Peace�. The Essenes were an extremely righteous group who lived close to the Dead Sea at about the time of Jesus Christ. In fact it was Christ that actually taught them all about the laws of health during this time. The main thing that the Essene Book I teaches you is you do not kill your food by cooking it, whilst in Book IV they teach you that all grasses are good for man and wheatgrass is the most perfect food. You can actually purchase these little books at any health food store.

However, by the 1940's Charles Kettering (formally chairman of the board of General Motors) had donated some money into studying chlorophyll. Chlorophyll was then studied intensively by medical doctors and you will find that there are currently over 40 articles that have now been written on the healing properties of chlorophyll in medical journals. The doctors carrying out the research found that chlorophyll was in fact a great healer and carried on using it for some time. However, because of the pressure being placed on many doctors by drug companies the use of chlorophyll was phased out.

However at another time during the 1940's a lady called Ann Wigmore found that she had healed herself of cancer using certain weeds she found in a vacant lot close to her home in Boston. With the assistance of a friend called Dr Earp Thomas she began studying the natural healing qualities of the weeds she had been using. What she and Dr Thomas found was that there are 4,700 varieties of grass around the world and all of which are good for humans to consume. After carrying out some tests with the help of pets she found that Wheatgrass was the best medicinal grass. She then set up the Ann Wigmore Institute in Boston and people from across the world have now been taught about grasses and the living food healing program. A number of people who have attended this institute have found that the serious disease they attended with has cleared. If you search more closely you will find that Ann Wigmore has written over 35 books on the subject of wheatgrass and living foods.

However, in 2000 many more people were finding out about the benefits of liquid chlorophyll and since the 1940�s more research has been carried out not only on wheatgrass but also on barley grass and its healing properties.

Yoshihide Hagiwara who is the owner of a large pharmaceutical company in Japan has carried out extensive research into the healing properties of barley grass, all because he became seriously ill due to him working closely with synthetic drugs. His conclusion was that if synthetic drugs could make you ill, how could they make you well as well. He first of all began to study Chinese medicine and discovered that the father of Chinese medicine had said "It is the diet which maintains true health and becomes the best drug".

In fact if you look at the father of Western Medicine, Hippocrates he says basically the same thing. The basic teachings of Hippocrates is that the body can act as its own physician when provided with the right equipment i.e., living organic nourishment and as long as it is used the way nature intended (uncooked, unprocessed) all should be well.

Therefore it seems that God in fact designed all the foods on earth to be used in such a way as not only would they nourish the human body, but would also keep it in top physical condition and health. Our problem seems to be that we have forgotten these simple little rules.

It is well known that stress can potentially have a negative effect on both physical and mental health, but recent research conducted by the University of Valencia in Spain indicates that high-grade ethyl-epa fish oil could possibly prevent some of the adverse effects associated with chronic or prolonged stress. Ethyl-epa is a concentrated and purified form of the Omega 3 essential fatty acid Eicosapentaenoic acid or EPA. Researchers found that ethyl-epa helps transport the stress hormone cortisol through the blood brain barrier. This indicates that ethyl-epa fish oil could help cortisol to return to normal levels, which is important when we consider that during periods of prolonged stress, cortisol levels can remain very high and pose a significant risk to health.

Previous Research

Previous studies have already shown us that Omega 3 fatty acids can help us deal with stressful situations. For example, an Israeli study by Yehuda and colleagues reported in 2005 that Omega 3 fatty acids appear to lower cortisol levels, reduce anxiety and improve test anxiety responses. Stress and anxiety related to tests and exams is quite common and can be a major problem for some people and the implications are that increasing intake of Omega 3 fatty acids by supplementing with fish oil might offer some relief. But it's when we are under sustained pressure that we are most at risk of the negative effects of stress, particularly when we cannot relax and allow the body to return to normal afterwards.

A study at Lausanne University published in 2003 found that after giving fish oil for 3 weeks, there was a reduction in stress hormones. Also in 2003, Dr David Horrobin reported that EPA was effective for reducing cortisol and anxiety levels. According to Robert Sapolsky, a neuroendicronlogist and expert on the effect of stress on the body, sustained high levels of cortisol can actually damage the neurons in the hippocampus, the part of our brain we use for learning and memory. Indeed, a recent study conducted by the University of Edinburgh and published in February 2006 in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, suggested that high levels of cortisol could be a cause of Alzheimer's disease later in life.

What is Cortisol?

Cortisol is an important chemical that is produced by the body to help us cope with stress. It is part of the "fight or flight" mechanism and without it we would not survive. It is at its highest level first thing in the morning and at its lowest last thing at night. Problems arise when we are subjected to prolonged or continuous periods of stress when cortisol levels are likely to remain very high for some time. Some of the health problems associated with prolonged stress include:

* cardiovascular disease
* depression
* skin problems
* digestive problems
* memory loss
* high blood pressure
* inability to concentrate
* decreased immunity
* mood swings
* fatigue
* anxiety
* feeling of negativity

How can EPA fish oil help?

Research has shown that people under stress have an increased ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 fatty acids in their blood. Omega 6 fatty acids are known to be pro-inflammatory and result in an increase in pro-inflammatory cytokines and eicosanoids which can not only lead to many new health problems arising, it can significantly worsen any existing health conditions.

Fish oil that is high in the Omega 3 fatty acid EPA helps the body to produce anti-inflammatory cytokines and eicosanoids, reducing the risk to health and at the same time can provide some relief for many existing health problems. Stress is a natural and necessary part of life and can be described as any event, external or internal, that causes us emotional worry and/or physical distress. It is when it is sustained and prolonged that it becomes a major risk factor for illness and disease. Increasing our intake of Omega 3 fatty acids by supplementing with fish oil can play a role in helping us to face and deal with stressful situations. However, ethyl-epa fish oil in particular, would appear to be an effective, natural and safe option not only to help us deal with stress as it arises, but to reduce the risk posed by the potentially serious effects of prolonged stress.

You must read labels

Splenda is found in processed foods and drinks - mostly, but our latest concern is that 10 % of Splenda is being sold to drug companies and the FDA doesn't require them to report this very toxic product on their labels.

The following symptoms have been noticed within a 24-hour period following consumption of Splenda products:

* Skin -- Redness, itching, swelling, blistering, weeping, crusting, rash, eruptions, or hives (itchy bumps or welts). These are the most common allergic symptoms that people have.

* Lungs -- Wheezing, tightness, cough, or shortness of breath.

* Head -- Swelling of the face, eyelids, lips, tongue, or throat; headaches and migraines (severe headaches).

* Nose -- Stuffy nose, runny nose (clear, thin discharge), sneezing.

* Eyes -- Red (bloodshot), itchy, swollen, or watery.

* Stomach -- Bloating, gas, pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or bloody diarrhea.

* Heart -- Palpitations or fluttering.

* Joints -- Joint pains or aches.

* Neurological -- Anxiety, dizziness, spaced-out sensation, depression.

This is not a complete list. A person just reported that the mystery of her mother's conjunctival hemorrhage (blood on the white part of eye); completely cleared up once her mom stopped consuming Splenda.

Please pass this on to family and friends. Also remember that Equal (Aspartame) is just as toxic if not worse. I became overweight and like most people blamed it on me and my eating habits, but I knew that diets and potions on TV DO NOT WORK and therefore put off doing anything until I stumbled across a solution.

In 1999 I began itching and it got worse almost by the day. I started taking antihistamines to reduce the itching and over a 10 month time period visited 4 dermatologists. The first 3 doctors miss diagnosed my problem. The forth discovered the cause but I had to use a pesticide all over my body to correct the condition - I know this seems strange but I had an infestation of Norwegian mites under my skin (I didn't even know that mites had a pedigree much less a country of origin).

When I used the pesticide to kill the mites I swelled up like the Pillsbury Dough Boy. With this ordeal I gained even more weight and ended up looking like Porky the Pig. I also lost my sense of taste because of all the antihistamines.

In 2002 I did some consulting work for a supplement company and they gave me a gift book by Sherry Rogers, MD. At the same time I had a patient in my office that sensitive to all chemicals including the chemicals from a carpet that was 6 months old and from my cologne. He had to wear a mask filled with carbon just to get through a basic eye examination. After quizzing him about his condition I discovered that over 6 million people in the US can't function normally because of toxic chemicals - that means holding down jobs and leading a normal life.

Because of this patient I began to investigate toxic chemicals and how they affect people, particularly my health, my taste, and weight problems. With this information I have lost 70 pounds, gone from a jean size of 50 to 40. I feel better, look better, and my big belly that used to catch food is almost gone. (I no longer catch food on my stomach)

I have discovered that the public is one big toxic chemical experiment by industrial food manufactures, chemical companies that control farm chemicals with Genetically Engineered crops, drug companies and companies that want to dump their waste products without protecting the public.

There are some really good people that write books and educate people about health issues, economic issues, environmental issues, food problems but all these people specialize in certain areas. My job as I see it is to be a reporter and filter the important information to my subscribers.

I have also been a farmer for years and one of my discoveries is that our diseased health economy starts with toxic chemicals and crop land.

GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, is one of the most common chronic conditions out there, but it's only recently that people started to realize what it is and what a GERD symptom is. Otherwise known as acid reflux disease, GERD occurs when the muscles, or sphincters, that close the lower part of your esophagus don't work properly. Then the fluids in your stomach can leak into the esophagus and cause the acid reflux.

That burning feeling in the back of your throat-one of the clearest GERD symptom-occurs because, simply, the acidic fluids from your stomach are burning the tender lining of your esophagus. That's the reason for GERD's most common nickname, heartburn. The burning sensation can sometimes feel as if it's almost happening deep in your chest cavity, near your heart.

Besides this burning sensation, other acid reflex symptoms include a diffuse pain in the chest, sore throat or hoarse voice in the morning, or a full feeling in the back of your throat. You could also suffer from a tight feeling in your throat, a problem with swallowing, a dry cough, and even bad breath.

If you listen to all those medication commercials on TV, you may be led to believe that you must buy an expensive GERD treatment to deal with acid reflux disease and its symptoms. But an acid reflux cure does not necessarily have to come from a costly prescription. You can actually eat a GERD diet to prevent the condition. Depending on your particular case of GERD, this acid reflux diet for prevention could mean that you avoid caffeinated sodas, spicy foods, chocolate and peppermint candies, overly acidic foods, and fatty and fried foods.

Part of this GERD diet could involve not only what foods to avoid, but also when to eat in general to prevent acid reflux disease. For instance, no matter what foods your acid reflux diet does and does not include, it's important to eat your meals at least two to three hours before bedtime-at least. That's because lying down with a full stomach can lead to more of those acidic stomach juices leaking into your esophagus.

Your GERD treatment may also involve certain lifestyle changes. Being overweight is not an acid reflux symptom, but it sure may be a major factor in the condition. So your doctor may recommend a regimen of exercise to go along with that GERD diet, to help you burn calories and melt off those extra pounds. Negative lifestyle behaviors such as smoking and drinking alcohol also can contribute to acid reflux, so you may want to consider cutting down, or quitting them altogether.

The point of all this information-GERD treatment is in your hands first and foremost. With a slight change to your eating habits and a few lifestyle changes, you could cure yourself of that painful and annoying acid reflux, and without resorting to expensive pills or gimmicky tricks.

The only cases of bird flu in America, thus far, have been caused by a different strain of flu virus than the one that is currently sweeping through Asia, Africa and eastern Europe killing thousands of wild and domesticated birds. Wild birds carry a number of these flu viruses, but it is only one strain, H5N1, that has governments throughout the world concerned, both because of the risk to the poultry industry and because H5N1 has caused the deaths of 140 people to date. Countries throughout the world are making efforts to inform the public about safety practices that can lead to bird flu prevention.

Scientists expect to eventually see the H5N1 bird flu in America, but it might not show up. The concern is that migratory birds from Asia could pass the H5N1 strain to migratory birds from the Americas when they both gather in Alaska. So, H5N1 bird flu prevention at this point is focused on Alaska. Scientists believe that if they can identify H5N1 bird flu in America when it first appears, then they can contain it, before it becomes a problem to the poultry industries in the Americas.

The U.S. Geologic Survey and the Department of Agriculture have joined together in a H5N1 bird flu prevention effort that includes testing feces and feather samples from about 150,000 wild birds, mostly waterfowl. Scientists believe that if they find H5N1 bird flu in America, it will most likely show up in the waterfowl first. Unlike domesticated poultry, wild birds can carry the H5N1 bird flu in America and elsewhere in the world without dying. In areas of the world where wild birds mingle freely with domesticated birds they can infect their water supply or pass the virus to them through feces and other secretions, but USDA regulations in America as well as poultry industry standards decrease the likelihood that H5N1 bird flu in America, specifically the United States, will become a problem.

Large poultry farmers in the U.S. are now and always have been concerned about bird flu prevention, no matter what the strain. They take precautions to protect their birds, because their birds are their livelihood. Enclosures are designed to keep their birds in and wild birds out. Workers wear protective suits, boots and head coverings for bird flu prevention and to prevent other diseases from contaminating the poultry.

While there have been some cases of some strains of bird flu in America that have resulted in the destruction of several flocks of chickens in Texas and Virginia, there has only been one case of bird flu in America that affected a human. He was a USDA official and it was a weaker strain of the virus.

While no bird flu prevention efforts can negate the possibility of any bird flu in America, farmers, scientists and government agencies throughout the world are making efforts to identify and contain outbreaks quickly. If you are concerned about bird flu prevention for you and your family, take the same precautions that you would always take to protect yours and your family's health. Cook meat thoroughly. Wash hands, cooking utensils, counter tops or cutting boards that have touched raw meat thoroughly. Eat right, get plenty of rest, take your vitamins and make efforts to maintain a healthy immune system. Melanoma is a malignant tumor predominantly found in the skin but can be found elsewhere, especially the eye. The vast majority of melanomas originate in the skin.

Melanomas are the most lethal form of skin cancer. As with most forms of cancer, earlier detection gives patients a better chance of survival.

Epidemiologic studies from Australia suggest that exposure to ultraviolet radiation is one of the major contributors to the development of melanoma. Occasional extreme sun exposure resulting in a sunburn is causally related to melanoma. Those with more chronic long term exposure (outdoor workers) may develop protective mechanisms.

Melanoma is most common on the back in men and on legs in women (areas of intermittent sun exposure) and is more common in indoor workers than outdoor workers (in a British study). Other factors are mutations in or total loss of tumor suppressor genes. Use of sunbeds with deeply penetrating UVA rays has been linked to the development of skin cancers, including melanoma.

Possible significant elements in determining risk include the intensity and duration of sun exposure, the age at which sun exposure occurs, and the degree of skin pigmentation. Exposure during childhood is a more important risk factor than exposure in adulthood. This is seen in migration studies in Australia where people tend to retain the risk profile of their country of birth if they migrate to Australia as an adult. Individuals with blistering or peeling sunburns especially in the first twenty years of life have a significantly greater risk for melanoma.

Fair and red-headed people are at greater risk for developing melanoma. A person with multiple atypical nevi or dysplastic nevi are at a significant risk. Persons born with giant congenital naevi are at increased risk.

A family history of melanoma greatly increases a person's risk. Certain 'melanoma families' display features of mendelian inheritance of cancer causing genes. It is critical that individuals with family members who have been diagnosed with melanoma be checked regularly for skin cancer. Patients with a history of one melanoma are at increased risk of developing a second primary tumour.

Any mole that is irregular in color or shape should be examined by a doctor to determine if it is a malignant melanoma, the most serious and life-threatening form of skin cancer. Following a visual examination and a dermatoscopic exam (an instrument that illuminates a mole, revealing its underlying pigment and vascular network structure), the doctor may biopsy the suspicious mole. If it is malignant, the mole and an area around it needs excision by a surgeon or dermatologist.

The diagnosis of melanoma requires experience, as early stages may look identical to harmless moles or not have any color at all. Where any doubt exists, the patient will be referred to a specialist dermatologist.

Minimize exposure to sources of ultraviolet radiation (the sun and sunbeds).

One point to remember is that one can have too much of a good thing. For instance, eating mango for breakfast, carrots for lunch and sweet potatoes for dinner, daily, beta carotene levels will be very high; in fact, too high, and keeping this sort of diet for long will produce an unhealthy yellowish skin color. There is not need either to eat fish or eggs every single day, as there are other foods with equally high nutrition value.

There are many different types of hypertension and the reason for having each of them varies. The type of hypertension that has no known cause is called essential (or primary) hypertension. Even medicine that has been prescribed to tackle your high blood pressure can cause a rebound hypertension effect if they are stopped too quickly. It goes without saying that street drugs are bad for your health but drugs such as amphetamines, ecstasy and cocaine can cause hypertension as well.

Many would say that having children gives them high blood pressure but for many women that problem starts before the child is born with gestational hypertension. Potential Problems

Nuts are an important source of protein in a vegetarian diet, but they are deficient in the amino acid lysine, so in a vegetarian diet, nuts should be combined with other lysine rich sources of protein, like beans and pulses.

It should be noted that unlike high blood pressure, which is defined on the basis of blood pressure alone, low blood pressure is defined primarily by signs and symptoms of low blood flow. In fact, some individuals may have a blood pressure of 90/50 and have no signs or symptoms of low blood pressure, and, therefore, not have low blood pressure symptoms. Others who normally have a blood pressure of 130/80 may develop symptoms and signs of low blood pressure if their blood pressure drops to 100/60.

Make Your Own Sauna!

Four, red heat bulbs from the hardware store are mounted on a piece of 1/2" plywood, 40" high and 15" wide. The unit is placed in a small bathroom or closet at least 4' long, 3' wide and 6' high. In addition to the wood and bulbs, you will need four flush-mount bulb sockets, fifteen feet of heavy lamp cord, a medium-heavy duty male wall plug and 8 wood screws to fasten the sockets to the plywood. An on-off switch and a thermometer are optional, but recommended.

Mount the sockets on the plywood in a diamond shape. The bottom socket is in the center, 1' from the bottom of the plywood. Two sockets are 28" from the bottom of the plywood and 10" apart. The top socket is centered on the plywood and 3' from the bottom. This should form a narrow diamond shape.

Large sockets sold as fixtures can only be wired from the back. Drilling the holes will be more work. You may find smaller flush mount sockets that can be wired from the front. Wire the sockets together in parallel so one bad bulb won't disable the unit.

With each use, instead of plugging the unit in, it is easier to have a switch. The best is probably a wall switch that can handle 1000 watts. This requires an outlet box screwed to the plywood. Keep sweaty hands off the switch as they could cause a short.

The bulbs must be the red type, of 250 watts each. Do not use the clear ones as their spectrum is not correct. You must not touch the bulbs during use, or let water or anything touch them. Observe all cautions as with any appliance exposed to heat and moisture. If children or the disabled will use the unit, consider a protective screen. Bend some chicken or stucco wire around the bulbs and staple it to the wood. Another way is to recess the bulbs or place them in reflectors. If building an enclosure, you could place the bulbs behind.

Lean the unit against a bathroom or closet wall. Secure it so it won't fall over. The enclosure needs be small enough to hold the heat, and large enough to turn around. The other option is to build an enclosure of wood, glass or cardboard. Build the unit at least 4' by 3' by 6' high. Siding made of cedar or fir is a popular option. The siding slides into a frame and no nails are needed. Walls can be built as modules, then screwed together. (see Sauna Detox)

Plywood will also work, since the enclosure stays relatively cool. Some sauna companies use glass for at least one wall. Glass reflects far infrared energy but is not a good insulator. Cardboard is the least expensive. Tape or staple together two refrigerator boxes. Ventilating the sauna is a good idea. To allow gases to escape, leave a crack around the door or somewhere else high up.

Medical research confirms the use of sauna provides cardiovascular conditioning as the body works to cool itself and involves substantial increase in heart rate, cardiac output and metabolic rate. As a confirmation of the validity of this form of cardiovascular conditioning, extensive research by NASA in the early 1980's led to the conclusion that infrared stimulation of cardiovascular function would be the ideal way to maintain cardiovascular conditioning in American astronauts during long space flights. Blood flow during whole-body hypothermia is reported to rise from a normal 5-7 pints per minute to as much as 13 pints per minute.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a devastating disorder that is one of many listed under the general term, 'Repetitive Strain Injury' (RSI).

Of all repetitive strain injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome is the most recognized and prevalent among the general populace. And due to this recognition, many people are concerned about being afflicted with carpal tunnel and its debilitating symptoms, a concern that should be on the minds of anyone that is involved in work or recreational activities that require extensive use of the hands, especially in static motions such as 'gripping' and/or repetitive motions like typing, clicking a computer mouse, assembly, etc.

Below is a list of the symptoms associated with carpal tunnel syndrome and a list of steps that can be taken to help prevent this terrible and devastating disorder that has reached pandemic proportions.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Symptoms:

- Tightness, discomfort, stiffness or pain on the front side of the hands/wrists.

- Tingling, numbness and/or paresthesia (Pins & needles) affecting the thumb, index, middle and one-half of the ring finger. The thumb and fingers do not have to be affected simultaneously as symptoms will often vary and move around. (Example: The thumb and index finger may be numb one day and the next day the numbness and tingling in the thumb and middle finger are more noticeable.)

- Loss of strength in the fingers/hands. (Grip Strength)

- Pain, aching, swelling, and diminished coordination and dexterity.

- A need to stretch and/or massage hands, wrists and arms.

- Assuming a defensive posture in order to protect sensitive hands/wrists.

Because carpal tunnel syndrome and its symptoms are something that everyone should be aware of in this day and age of computers, video games, personal assistant devices and other �technological advances�, it is important to take the necessary steps in order to prevent carpal tunnel from developing in the first place.

By implementing the following steps, you can greatly reduce your risk of getting carpal tunnel syndrome as well as stave off many other repetitive strain injuries that are caused in the exact same manner as carpal tunnel, such as Guyon�s Syndrome, Trigger Finger and Tendonitis of the hands and wrists.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Prevention Protocol:

- Task Variation: It is wise to vary tasks throughout the day in order to keep the force and duration of the specific motion to a minimum. If a typical workday involves 5 types of activities; instead of doing task #1 for 1.5 hours and then moving on to task #2 for 1.5 hours, etc., it is best if task #1 can be performed for 30-minutes and then task #2 is performed for 30 minutes, and so on, repeating tasks #1-5 every 30 minutes until they are completed. If this is not possible for the type of work that is required, ask the employer health director to implement a task rotation schedule where workers perform a different type of task every 1-2 hours throughout the day, making sure that each task is different enough that it does not tax the same muscle group(s) in the same manner as the previous task or the next task. It is still important that in these 1-2 hour shifts that mini-breaks are taken for 2-3 minutes every 30 minutes. Implementing task variation is very successful tool in keeping productivity high and repetitive strain injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome to a minimum.

- Task Requirement Limitation: The 'task requirement limitation' protocol sets a limit on the duration and force of a given job or task, making sure that workers are only required to perform a certain number of repetitive movements or a certain amount of force over a specified period of time before a break is required. Implementing a mini break for every 30 minutes of work activity is very important in order to prevent muscle hypertonicity and fatigue from setting in, the main causes of carpal tunnel syndrome.

- Ergonomic Systems: Ergonomic systems and tools are important in helping to reduce the amount of stress and strain that is inflicted upon the body, but ergonomic systems and tools by themselves cannot prevent or 'cure' injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome.

- Mini-Breaks: It is very important to implement short breaks every 30 minutes of work activity in order to reduce stress and strain to the fingers, hands, wrists and forearms. These breaks only have to last 2-3 minutes, but are key in allowing the muscles to relax, which helps to prevent a muscle imbalance from occurring and developing into carpal tunnel syndrome. Even more important in carpal tunnel syndrome prevention, is implementing the following activities into these mini-breaks.

- Stretch: Stretch the short, restrictive muscles in order to lengthen them, which, reduces pressure on the underlying muscles, blood vessels and nerves. (Example: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome � Stretch the muscles on the front of the forearm that flex the fingers, hand/wrist.)

- Exercise: Strengthen the weak, underdeveloped muscles in order to help shorten/tighten them. Performing strengthening exercises to the muscle groups opposite to those that are short and tight allows the muscles on both sides of the joint to return to a more natural, balanced position. The strong, short muscles are lengthened and the weak, long muscles are shortened, creating equality and stability around the entire joint. (Example: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome � Strengthen the muscles on the back of the forearm that extend the fingers, hand/wrist.)

NOTE: Of all the ideas listed, the ones that are most important in preventing and eliminating repetitive strain injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome are mini-breaks, stretches and exercises.

By simply being aware and implementing a few simple techniques at work, individuals can prevent repetitive strain injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome from occurring and experience many years of good health without ever being affected.
