If you are like me forgetting familiar people and things can be a painful and baffling aspect of aging. There is however both good and bad news with memory loss.

- The bad news: memory loss will probably affect all of us as we grow older.

- The GOOD news: there are some very effective treatments for most memory loss.

There comes a time in all of our lives when our recollection of people and events may seem to be just slipping away. Forgetting familiar people and things can be a painful and baffling aspect of getting older.

It is a helpless feeling, trying to hold on to things like names, faces, people and places. Suddenly you forget the name of the man who has been serving you coffee at the neighborhood coffee shop for decades.

You forget where you kept your glasses and find it impossible to recall phone numbers of good friends you have known. This is a symptom of the normal aging process but the question remains is memory loss treatable?

Is there a way to figuratively "turn back the clock" and reclaim what has been lost? Can we go back to remembering small things like names of people, faces, places and important appointments?

-- Explore Promising Solutions for Memory Loss --

Memory loss affects not just the person experiencing it but also the people around them. This is because if somebody misses an appointment or forgets a task then other people involved are also affected.

Memory loss may also be an early indication of more serious diseases and health problems. Memory loss covers a range of health conditions like:

- normal aging
- amnesia
- head trauma
- strokes
- Alzheimer's
- Dementia
- stress

The point should be made that if you suffer from memory loss don't panic. It could be a normal sign of aging. Just make sure you see your doctor to discuss your memory shortcomings.

Don't stress about memory loss! Seek diagnosis and treatment and forget about it.

Once a source of extreme embarrassment and shame my wife and I have learned to make a little joke out of our memory challenges.

While these problems should not be taken lightly, it is also necessary to remember that life is not over. You can live an active life even while suffering from memory loss.

In fact, many therapists believe that the most effective way to break out of the memory loss circle is to keep an active healthy lifestyle. This includes a balanced diet, regular exercise if you are able and you can even consider meditation.

This may be why on days I exercise my mind is much more focused, clear, and less likely to forget.

-- Overcome Stress and Memory Loss --

Therapeutic activities like yoga and meditation help keep the mind stress free. These activities work towards avoiding the forgetfulness that arises out of tension.

A lot of people in their 20s and 30s experience Memory loss due to excessive stress and tension. This kind of Memory loss is not related to age but has its roots in stress.

Stress hampers the effective working of the mind and causes delay of reaction. This is because of nervousness and the unreasonable desire to do too much in too little time.

You should learn to plan your activities according a realistic time frame. In other words learn the art of time management.

Time management will reduce more than half of your total stress and lessen overall memory loss for many ambitious people.

-- Follow these Memory Boosting Tips --

- Plan your activities carefully.
- Keep enough time to unwind
- Recover from the strenuous and exhausting work
- Exercise after checking with your doctor.

Exercises like walking, running, meditation and tai chi not only help keep you more healthy but also helps clear your mind. This allows you to focus on more important tasks and reduces the margin of forgetfulness.

To further support your memory boosting efforts you may consider supplements like Neurovar. This supplement aims to provide you the best combination of vitamins, herbs and minerals that benefit your brain functioning.

The makers of Neurovar make the case that their product is far more effective than similar products. It draws on research from the latest advances in cognitive nutritional technology to maximize optimal brain health. The blend of all these powerful ingredients makes Neurovar a product you should seriously look into and is available from Amazon or

What is wine fermentation?

In short, it is the complex action whereby the living organism of yeast breaks the sugar down into carbon dioxide and alcohol. The action of the yeast on the sugar continues until the volume of alcohol has reached somewhere between 12.5% to 14%.

At this stage, the yeast organism is destroyed by the alcohol it has produced and fermentation ceases. This is what is known as a natural wine. Most commercial products come under this category until they have been fortified. This period of fermenting in the tub can be a dangerous time. Because of this, the fermentation process should be completed as soon as possible (even at the risk of losing a little of the wine's bouquet).

Next, we must then keep the brew warm. Our goal here is to bring about ideal conditions in which the living organism and yeast cells can multiply more rapidly. Warmth helps to ensure this. The faster they multiply, the more rapidly they convert the sugar into alcohol and therefore, the sooner the yeast destroys itself.

Do not be tempted to keep a brew hot during fermentation. During warm weather, any odd spot will do for a fermenting brew. Also, a warm spot in the kitchen or in an airing cupboard is as good as any during the winter.

After 14 day of fermentation in a warm place, the wine can be bottled or put into stone jars. This is the time to add the isinglass.

Adding the Isinglass:

Isinglass is not needed to clarify flower or fruit wines made with the recipes given at These wines will clarify themselves quite readily within a few weeks of fermentation. Nor is isinglass an absolute need for clearing root wines. However, I have found that root wines and wines made from a mixture of roots and fruits, do clear more readily with the help of isinglass. For this reason, some recipes will instruct you to "proceed with isinglass and bottling".

When put into wine, isinglass forms an insoluble cloud which surrounds the minute solids in the wine and gradually forces them to the bottom of the bottle.

Besides assisting the clearing process, isinglass helps to solidify the lees, thereby rendering them less easy to disturb while moving the bottles or when wine is poured from a bottle containing lees.

There are many methods of using isinglass, but the one I use myself without fail results is as follows:

Take one quart of the wine and warm it very slowly in a saucepan. Next, crumble 1/8 of an ounce of isinglass over the surface of this wine and then stir with a fork until everything is dissolved. Then pour it into the rest of the wine in a circular motion.

Many people advise dissolving the isinglass in a small amount of water. As we've seen, ordinary tap-water quite often contains wild yeast; the very act, then, of using water might well ruin all of our efforts to keep wild yeast out of the wine.

When purchased from a chemist in 1/2 ounce or 1 ounce quantities, the amount required is easy to calculate, and this is usually plenty for one gallon of wine.

When the isinglass has been added, put the wine into sterilized bottles or jars and cover as already directed. The wine must then be returned to a warm place, and kept there until all fermentation has ceased.

If the wine were put in a cold place the yeast might go dormant and the wine would not be able to ferment. If it were later moved into a warm room, or the weather happened to turn very warm, the yeast would become active and start fermenting again. In a warm place, fermentation will not fail.

If you happen to notice that the top half-inch of wine has become crystal-clear, seal the bottles at once! This is a clear indication that fermentation has stopped. Unfortunately, we rarely get this invaluable guide.

When all fermentation has stopped and when no more small bubbles are rising to the top, the yeast is dead. Fermentation cannot begin again unless wild yeast or bacteria get into the wine and start that souring ferment that I've previously mentioned. Perfect air-tight sealing at the earliest possible stage of production is critical.

Push the cork down hard and seal with sealing-wax. If screw-top bottles are available, use these if you prefer. Personally, I never use any other kind when I can find them. Remember that the yeast is dead, so fermentation cannot begin again and explode the bottles or blow the corks unless wild yeast or bacteria reach the wine. Screw-top bottles are, then, the obvious choice.

Can we get rid of stress? Oh, I wish we could. Stress is like changes in our daily lives. I'm afraid we have to face it and bear it like everyone else. What is important is how we deal with stress to reduce anxiety and panic attacks in our day-to-day lives. Stress is present and will always be present in our minds, activities, daily living, and the like.

Environmental stresses can include the stresses caused due to our social and personal losses like an injury to a near and dear one or the death of someone close to you or to some outstanding bills etc. The identification of environmental stresses can be done by the fact that they put forward huge expectations from you. We often tolerate loud honks at the traffic signals, peeping neighbors, expectations and stresses at work place considering them as inevitable.

We so often feel that our self-confidence is being bogged down due to a fall in our performance. We seem to be losing our confidence at such times instead of reminding ourselves that in spite of any failure you remain the same person. We should not let stress take control of our mind and behavior because then it will lead to panic attacks and make way for anxiety.

Our body undergoes changes everyday since our inception in our mother s womb. We grow vertically until we reach twenty years and then make way for other directions to grow. We face several changes in our body until we cross adolescence. Women undergo several biological transformations like periods and menopause. We all battle the process of ageing. We all fear illness and injuries because they may make us frail and may cause physical pain. Though the process of change cannot be avoided, it can be slowed down by proper diet and exercise regime. Thus, we must avoid harmful chemicals like cola etc. as far as possible.

The human mind is the biggest source of stress. It causes stress because it is not programmed to deal with just every kind of situation and thus, you blow off under certain circumstances and don't blow off in the other. More often than not, our mind perceives the changes around those, and us as negative, which are out there to destroy us. Stress can never be a way of life as some of the high profile corporate refers to it. It can only cause huge damage to your body in the long run.

The mind is the lock as well as the key to stress and its removal. If our mind misinterprets something then it causes emotional outbursts, anxiety, and panic. On the other hand if our mind perceives something in the way we want it to then our behavior is polite and tone happy. Therefore, it is clear that our state of mind determines our public behavior. Anxiety and panic are more often the results of stress caused due to misunderstanding etc. In addition, more often than not anxiety and panic come from absolutely unnecessary sources like from someone who gave you a bad stare while you were walking down the lane etc.

In our relationships too concern, worries and stress result into anxiety and panic. Arguments between spouses can be on small issues as well as large ones. If they are not sensible enough to resolve the matter as quickly as possible then it would cause further stress and lead to anxiety and panic attacks.

Most of the time people get flustered because they cannot accept changes as a natural course of action. They mistake them for negative and dangerous sources. Thus, we must accept change as a way of life and should think twice before reacting in a stressful condition.

One of the distressing things about growing up, is that sooner or later, SPOTS and other nasty blemishes start to appear over your face. Some of us unfortunately seem to get it far worse than others.

To teenagers or young men, it may be laughed off as 'becoming a man' but to a young lady it can feel catastrophic. However, most adolescents go through the same period of discomfort. You will come out of it at some point.

It is common to note that acne can have adverse effects on an acne suffers' self-esteem.

It can even ruin a social butterflys social life, as acne often makes you want to hide away.

All of a sudden, parties become a source of total despair and loneliness.

Your self confidence can hit rock bottom and you may find yourself feeling lonely and depressed. You may not even want your picture taken; you would rather sit in the dark corner at parties.

The solution for this is simple: acne treatment.

Treating this can be compared to dieting.

It takes will power, time, and dedication before you can see the fruits of your labor. But - what is worse - cutting down on some of your pleasurable foods, or being able to face the lime light without shrinking into a hole?

Clear skin is always an indication of healthy skin, and when you have acne, you feel like a castaway or reject of society. But often there is no need to let your acne get you down, when you can use acne treatment products.

These products are there for your benefit and will help you.

You are not alone and there are people who understand your acne plight and are willing to help you get that clear healthy skin. Youngsters throughout the ages have had the same problem so don't be afraid to ask for help.

All you have to do is reach out and grab that help.

Hold on for dear life until this worrisome issue is not a major social problem in your life. Find the right treatment product for your skin type and enjoy the benefits it gives when you use it to its maximum.

This is your ticket out of your misery and loneliness and sometimes you need to make that effort to find the product that will indeed make a difference in your life.

Even though acne treatment products work, don't buy into the hype. One thing that really annoys me are suppliers who prey on your condition to persuade you to part with useless jellies and other balms for your skin.

Be a well-informed buyer; and spend some time scouting before you buy. Especially, ask your friends (if you aren't too embarrassed)

Dont buy the first treatment product you see. Research all the ones you have chosen first and find if they have any side effects before you take out your wallet.

The choice is yours. Use it wisely and you will enjoy the benefit of higher self-esteem that comes with clearer skin. All of a sudden, the attraction to the opposite sex will shine through, and you will emerge like a caterpillar into a butterfly.

We've all seen them. Clusters of big, gourmet cookies, individually wrapped in shiny, colored cellophane, with bows and ribbons. They come in many styles and with different treats, toys or gift items attached to or inside a basket or vase of some sort. They make a terrific and edible gift idea. After all, who doesn't love cookies? Sadly, they can be very expensive gifts, especially when considering that cookies don't cost a whole lot to bake.

Here's how to make your own cookie bouquets at home without spending a fortune!

What You Will Need:

Chopsticks or Wooden Skewers - Make sure they are heat-proof. If you're baking smaller cookies, then popsicle sticks would also work.

Cookies - Find a delicious cookie recipe that makes larger size cookies, (your favorite or your gift recipients favorite will do fine)

Container - This needs to be a sturdy container that is a bit bottom heavy, especially if you plan to include more than a few big cookies. You can try putting some pebbles in the bottom to make sure the container won't tip over, if needed. Some ideas for containers include: a coffee mug, a metal or plastic pail, a basket, a vase, a planter, cookie jar or glass jar, glass bottle, a toy or wood box of some sort, teapot, porcelain or pottery serving ware.

Cellophane - The shiny, colored kind looks best, but the colored plastic wrap you get at your local supermarket would work too.

Ribbon - The curly kind works well for this. Any colors you like.

Decorations - Anything goes! What's appropriate to the occasion and what does the gift recipient like? Some ideas include: stuffed animals, small toys, candy, balloons, fake or real flowers, stickers or whatever you find at the local craft store.

Block of styrofoam or florists foam - You know that stereo you bought last December? You probably kept the box, just search your garage for some spare, clean, stryofoam.

Something to cover up the stryofoam or florist's foam - You can use a big ribbon, some moss, plastic grass, tissue paper crumpled up or whatever else you have handy.

1. When you place the cookie dough on the cookie sheet, press the dough down a bit to flatten it so that it doesn't spread too much while baking and so that the stick can be inserted properly. Before you bake the cookies, you must insert the chopstick or wooden skewer into one side of each cookie. Push it in almost the length of the cookie without going out the other end. This is an important step, as if your cookie is too big and your stick is not sturdy enough, the stick won't hold it and the cookie may fall apart when you pick it up. When baking big cookies, you probably won't be able to fit more than 3 cookies with their sticks to a cookie sheet.

2. After baking the cookies with their sticks, cool the cookies thoroughly, then wrap each one with the colored cellophane. A different color for each cookie would be ok, or all the same color appropriate to the occasion. Tie each one with some curly ribbon at the base where the stick comes out of the cookie. Tie it very tightly so the cookies will stay fresh on the stick. You can adorn each cookie with additional, larger ribbons or bows at this point. When using curly ribbon, don't forget to curl it!

3. Now cut your styrofoam or florist's foam to the size of the top of the container you chose. Then fit the foam in so it is nice and tight and near the top of the container. Remember, you can place something heavier in the bottom of the container so that it does not tip over. Small pebbles work well for this. Remember that the sticks will poke through the foam and into the bottom of the container.

4. Here comes the fun part, let's assemble the cookie bouquet! Take each of your cookies and stick them through the foam so they go all the way through the foam and further, near to the bottom of the container. You can assemble the cookies in any manner you like, but most cookie bouquets have one cookie at the center that is taller than the other cookies, so keep that in mind. Decorate with additional ribbons, toys, candy, flowers, gifts etc. Each item can be attached with additional ribbon to the container or the sticks of the cookies or even with a glue gun (if appropriate).

5. Give your gift and watch the smiles! Make sure to give the bouquet as soon as possible after you have assembled it, you don't want the cookies to go stale!

Make sure you bake enough cookies for your container, if baking small cookies, you may run out if you are filling a large container. Always bake more than enough. Surely your extras won't go to waste.

Bake both large and small cookies and use them both in the bouquet for a nice varied look, like a more traditional flower bouquet.

More Ideas:

Some cookie bouquets use cutout cookies, these can be fun to make and decorate. Use your favorite sugar cookie cutout recipe and cut into shapes appropriate for the occasion. For cutout cookies to work, you may want to double your sugar cookie recipe as the cookies need to be nice and thick for the stick to go through them. For this type of cookie, wooden skewers will work best, chopsticks may be too thick. Then decorate the cookies with frosting or icing. The icing should be the kind that hardens a little so that it won't stick to the wrapping. No need for colored cellophane with these cookies, use regular plastic wrap or clear cellophane so that the beauty of your hand decorated cookies shines through.

Remember, your cookie bouquet doesn't need to look professional, it's the homemade touch that makes it a truly special gift.

Iodine is vital to your hair growth. Sheep farmers long ago found that vegetation-lacking iodine due to iodine-depleted soil would adversely affect the growth of wool in their sheep. Likewise, to avoid hair loss, you need iodine. Iodine is synthetically added to table salt, however in this form it is not assimilated well into your body and can therefore cause iodine overload.

An excess of iodine in the body can adversely affect the thyroid. The lack of iodine can cause hypothyroidism. In hypothyroidism, your cell metabolism slows down and body cells and hair cells dont receive the energy they need to function properly. When you lack iodine, you will lose more hair than normal and may even lose eyebrow hair.

You can check your thyroid with a basal thermometer, not a digital thermometer, by placing it in your underarm first thing when you wake up. Then, dont move for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, look at the temperature. The normal body temperature for good thyroid function is 97.8 to 98.2 degrees C. Take this measurement for 5-10 day. If your temperature is below 97.6 and lower, for the 5-10 days, you will want to consult your doctor or for more direction and information. You definitely have low thyroid function.

Menstruating women should start this 5-10 day check on the 3rd day of their cycle.

It is best to use non-iodized salt and get your iodine from natural foods. These include seaweed, salmon, seafood, lima beans, molasses, eggs, potatoes with the skin on, watercress and garlic.

One of the most difficult nutrients vital to your hair growth to get in your diet is trace mineral silica. Silica is a form of silicon and is the second most abundant element in the earths crust, second only to oxygen. The Earth provides everything we need for health, and with silicon being so abundant, it would seem that there would never be a problem with silica deficiency.

Unfortunately, trace minerals are rare in our diets because our food is processed and our soil depleted by chemical treatments. Silica provides strength to your hair, and although it will not necessarily stop your hair from falling out from the follicle, it will stop hair breakage.

Silica works by stimulating your cell metabolism and formation, which slows the aging process. Foods that are rich in silica are rice, oats, lettuce, parsnips, asparagus, onion, strawberry, cabbage, cucumber, leek, sunflower seeds, celery, rhubarb, cauliflower, and swiss chard. Try to buy these vegetables from organic sources. Note that many of these foods, particularly rice, are a large part of Asian diets and Asians tend to have the strongest and healthiest hair.

For best results eat all your fruits and vegetables raw. For certain vegetables that need to be cooked, steam them for only a few minutes.

Be sure to test your thyroid even though doctors tests show you do not have a thyroid problem. The basal temperature test is sometimes more sensitive than blood tests taken by doctors. If you have hyperthyroidism, you will definitely have hair loss.

Considering you don't have an excessive amount of loose skin already it is possible to lose weight and keep your skin firm in the process. The idea is to keep your body well hydrated day in and day out. NEVER EVER let yourself become dehydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and NEVER EVER totally eliminate your carbohydrate intake. From my experience most people who have lost weight too fast by eliminating their carbohydrates ended up with a lot of excess skin afterwards. The whole idea is to lose the weight to get healthier and of course to look better with your clothes ON and with your clothes OFF. Here are some tips

1. Follow a well rounded balanced diet such as my insulin response diet located at

2. Follow a full body exercise routine alternating with a split routine every 4 weeks. For example, full body routine 4 weeks, split routine 4 weeks, full body routine 4 weeks, and so on.

3. Considering you don't have stomach ulcers and you are not on blood thinners you should also take ONE TEASPOON of cold artic cod liver oil ONCE PER DAY with your evening meal.

4. Take 1000-1500mg of lecithin per day. Lecithin has been known to increase the elasticity of the skin.

5. Anything you can do to increase circulation will also help. Skin brushing techniques are very good. Do a search on the internet for skin brushing to get all the info you need. Deep massages are also good.

6. Most importantly if you are more than 75 pounds overweight DO NOT try to lose weight too fast. The more you weigh the easier it will be to lose weight on this program so ease into it slowly so you only lose about 3 pounds per week. Doing this will prevent the sagging skin. If you lose weight too fast you will end up with loose skin 90% of the time.

7. Some of my clients have done weekly body wraps with great success but it can get messy. You can do this as an option but it's really not necessary.

As an option you can also take a supplement called collagen.

As I stated above one key to increasing the elasticity of your skin is to keep your body well hydrated. Yes, drinking water will do this. The average person needs at least an ounce of water per pound of body weight. Possibly more depending on the type of exercise you do on a daily basis. The reason why so many people end up with loose skin after losing weight is because they go on low carbohydrate diets that will in turn dehydrate the body. If you lose weight and are dehydrated in the process you will see the scale weight go down but unfortunately most of the weight being lost is nothing more than water weight. If you are losing 2-3 pounds per week you are doing great. If you are losing 4-6 pounds you are pushing the limit. Any more than 6 pounds per week and you are sure to end up with loose skin after losing the weight because chances are you are restricting too many carbohydrates from your diet. Cutting out refined flours/breads and sugars will yield the best results.

Also, instead of getting on the scale every week to measure your progress go more by how your clothes are fitting. I always tell my clients to try on the tightest pair of pants they have and then follow my program for 4 weeks and then try them on again. After 4 weeks those tight fitting pants will be a thing of the past.

Follow all the above and you will see satisfactory results.

The lower back pain treatment is required as lower back pain affects us more than any accident or any other short-term sickness. Though lower back pain treatment is available, it is important to understand and recognize the pain in proximity in order to select the best treatment. Lower back pain can occur any time and while doing any activity, such as driving a car, picking heavy objects, playing, or because of an accident. Lower back pain is so prevalent in America that at least 100 million workdays are lost every year and accounts for 15% of a person's sick leaves. That is quite a lot! If one does not receive lower back pain treatment on time, it might become potentially more damaging.

Types of Lower Back Pain Treatment

Lower back pain can be treated only when you have identified the origin of the pain. After you have identified the affected area, there are various options as far as lower back pain treatment is concerned, which generally depends on the severity of the pain. If you have a ruptured muscle or ligament, the treatment you would need would be completely different and best person to decide on the treatment type would be a spine specialist. One of the most common treatments for low back pain is acetaminophen. It is a pain reliever that is taken orally. This will relieve you from pain for a short period.

However, if you pain persists, then other oral medications maybe prescribed, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). However, the safest form of treatment is correct back exercises. They not only help in relaxing the muscles, but also improve blood flow. When suffering from back pain, the best resting position is to lie down on your back. Place some pillows under your knees, and bend your knees. This removes the unnecessary pressure and weight off your back, providing you with the much needed relief. It has been proved that back exercises are extremely helpful in providing relief against acute lower back pain. Then there is a heating pad, which is far more effective than ice packs and enables you to reduce painful muscle spasms and relax your ligaments

Almost everybody, no matter how confident they may seem, has a great fear of the unknown. Everybody has his own anxieties and combating fear is such a great challenge for everyone. For some, it may even be a source of entertainment as portrayed in the hit reality TV show "Fear Factor".

Anxiety is something not just shown on TV, it is something very real. One place that can create great anxiety in people can also be the place where most people built their careers and the place where they get their own source of income the workplace.

Work is one of the leading sources of stress and anxiety. Dealing with strict supervisors, chances of a demotion, whether you can get your job done on time and ultimately, the fear of getting fired can really give every worker something to be anxious about.

In any workplace, there is an existing system that you are forced to adhere to. These may include rules, regulations and office policies. Sometimes anxiety is brought about the fact that there may be some conflict of interest between doing what you think is right and what the present system dictates. This may be further illustrated when workers have to deal with customers or with their relationship with their co-workers. It is human nature to ease his or her own anxiety either by adapting or leaving your workplace.

The first step in combating anxiety is to accept that you are undergoing such stage. No matter how society might judge you, seeking professional help is greatly recommended.

You can also effectively lessen anxiety with physical workouts. Studies show that breathing exercises using the diaphragm muscle can lessen anxiety. Yoga is also a popular and unconventional way of managing anxiety. It allows oxygen to circulate efficiently inside your brain and this can help you relax and think more clearly.

You can also try simple steps in eliminating anxiety. The first thing to do is to jot down your strengths and your weakness. Focus on your goals and point out what you can do to achieve them. Talking to someone is very important in coping with anxiety. You can have a casual talk with your friend or spouse over the matter. They may not give you solid solutions to your problem but letting it all out can help a lot.

Lasik and other forms of laser eye surgery have become so common and effective that many health plans around the country may soon begin paying for them as acceptable forms of eye surgery. And if they don't, they should. The success rate with lasik eye surgery and laser eye surgery, in general, has made the procedure a household name, and made it also more affordable, so many more people can actually consider the procedure.

But no matter how many people have lasik eye surgery or laser eye surgery, you may still have your reservations. After all, they are slicing into your eyes, two of the most important organs you have, with a white-hot laser. So don't be afraid to ask any questions that you may have, and do as much research as necessary to make yourself comfortable with the procedure. Hopefully, we can get a jumpstart for you here with this article - and the answers to the 7 most commonly asked questions about laser eye surgery.

#1: What exactly is laser eye surgery? Lasik is one form of laser eye surgery, whose sole job is to make you not dependent on your glasses or contacts anymore. Lasik stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis.

#2: How does lasik work to correct vision? You sure you want to know the answer to this one? Kidding aside, laser eye surgery works because it actually changes the shape of your cornea, or the clear lens of your eye that allows light to enter your eye. Doctors use a microkeratome, a knife, to create a flap in your cornea. This is then folded back and a laser, called an excimer laser, is used to "shave" off the cornea until it's the proper shape. Of course, there are other types of laser eye surgery out there, some of which you may have already heard about, like intralase surgery.

#3: How do I know if lasik is right for me? There are a lot of considerations to make before you get the laser eye surgery. First, you have to ask yourself whether or not you can afford the procedure, or whether or not your work and health insurance will pick it up.

#4: Are there other medical conditions that could interfere with the surgery? Yes, you should be aware of any medications that you may be taking that can slow down your healing, such as steroids. You should make sure you don't suffer from a condition that could slow your healing, such as an autoimmune condition.

#5: Are all eyes able to be "shaved"? No, some eyes, especially those with other conditions, such as dry eye, thin corneas, or pupil disorders, do not make good candidates for laser eye surgery. If your prescription is still in flux - if you've changed prescriptions in the last year or two - you should probably hold off on the lasik eye surgery as well.

#6: Does laser eye surgery work 100 percent of the time? No, sometimes the results are not permanent. In that case, repeated procedures may be needed down the road. You could also suffer side effects such as dry eyes, contrast sensitivity, or even blindness.

#7: How do I find a doctor? Ask around your friends, family, colleagues, and other doctors. The best laser eye surgery doctors should be experienced, have the latest equipment, be able to explain everything about the procedure to your heart's content, and offer care down the road.

Hypertension is a condition of increased blood pressure on blood vessels. It is considered as one of the most common lifestyle diseases and has affected around 50 million people in the United States. Hypertension, also called high blood pressure, is categorized into two types - essential hypertension and secondary hypertension - on the basis of the underlying causes for its occurrence. The reason for essential hypertension is not easily identifiable and treated, while secondary hypertension is the complication of any other existing chronic disease such as alcohol abuse, kidney failure, and hormonal imbalance. It is a highly risky disease, which essentially needs treatment, since it can lead to arteriosclerosis that results degenerative diseases, stroke, and cardiac arrest.

Now, natural treatment is preferred to reduce hypertension, as people are more aware of the possible side effects of conventional medication. Natural treatment methodology also has a unique advantage to cure the underlying causes, which the conventional medicines usually lack. Natural methods focus to cure the risk factors for hypertension such as cholesterol, hormonal imbalance, diabetes and obesity to restore the equilibrium and perfect functioning of the body.

Natural treatment primarily starts with life style modification since bad habits have contributed much to the cause of the disease. Balanced diet and diet modification is an essential part of natural treatment, which helps to reduce obesity, a major risk factor for hypertension. In addition to other nutrients, potassium, calcium and magnesium have to be additionally included in the diet since they play vital role in blood control. The increased tendency to partake in common salt must be avoided, to maintain the balance of electrolytes. A recommended mineral rich diet must include milk and milk products, fishes, oysters, nuts, green vegetables, and fruits such as bananas, potatoes, and molasses. Supplements of minerals and vitamins are to be used, if a proper diet is not feasible.

Natural treatment requires hypertension patients to implement certain lifestyle modifications. Exercise and relaxation therapies are an inevitable part of natural treatment. The excess calories have to be burnt off through regular exercises and it helps to induce oxygenation of blood. Relaxation therapies and meditation techniques such as yoga, breathing exercises, tai chi, biofeedback, and hypnotherapy help to avoid stress and other related psychiatric problems. Avoid alkaloid rich drinks such as coffee and fatty foods. Smoking has to be essentially quitted and dependency on alcohol has to be avoided.

Natural treatment also suggests certain herbal remedies such as Withania somnifera, Convolvulus pluricaulis, Passiflora, and Ginkgo biloba. Garlic is also recommended as a routine ingredient of diet since it has the power of being a blood thinner. However, be cautious when taking herbal supplements, only using according to the advice of a physician since herbal alkaloids may interfere the balance of the body functions.

Hypertension is a silent killer, which exhibit its symptoms only in advanced conditions. Hence, modify your lifestyle to practice good habits and a balanced diet and you can reduce the risk of hypertension naturally.

Health Guru : Small Changes in Your Diet Can Make a Big Difference
Webmaster | 17. November 2007 @ 16:02

If you are one of the millions of people who ever tried to lose weight, then you know how hard it can seem to actually accomplish this goal. With countless numbers of diet plans out there promising fantastic weight loss results and all the hype about the thousands of "miracle" weight loss pills, powders and drinks, it's no wonder weight loss can seem to be quite the challenge.

Wouldn't it be nice if there were a way to be able to start to slim down without having to completely change everything about the way you eat and/or relying on diet fads and gimmicks? Well, read on and you will see that by just making some small changes, you can make some big strides in your effort to lose weight.

As a rule, we all know that too much fat in the diet is one of the major culprits in causing overweight problems in people. While that means fat intake should be cut down, it does not mean it can't be replaced with some better choices that pack fewer calories. For example, take the mayo off the sandwich and replace it with mustard. You cut off 100 calories per serving, all from fat, and replace it with zero calories per serving with no fat at all. Use fat-free cheese instead of regular cheese. Again, you will be replacing 45 calories per slice at 40 calories from fat with 30 fat-free calories. The sandwich is still the same size, but you cut over 115 extra calories off of it.

If you eat more bread, you are increasing your carbohydrates and eating less fat as well. In one study, a small increase of bread in the diet led to a 4% decrease of fat consumed. Depending on your overall calorie needs daily, this could mean you'll be eating more carbohydrates per day, but it is the reduction of fat and the overall reduction of calories that make you start to lose weight. The right balance of carbohydrates, proteins and fats in the proper calorie range determine energy levels and whether you'll lose weight and maintain a healthy body weight.

These foods are great sources of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants and are also low in calories and high in fiber. These foods are filling, nutritious and great for people trying to lose weight. When your parents used to say "make sure you eat all of your vegetables" they were right.

Just like vegetables, fruit is high in vitamins, minerals and fiber. Also, fruit is naturally sweet and can satisfy the need for bad sweets, like candy. Try to replace desserts and snacks such as cake and ice cream with fruit at least half of the time and it will make a huge difference.

Eating fish and chicken more often than red meat will reduce the amount of saturated fat in your diet. Too much saturated fat in the diet has been shown to cause atherosclerosis (artery blockage) which leads to heart problems and eventual failure. Skinless chicken breast and most fish are very lean and only contain small amounts of fat, not enough to worry about. When you eat fish, besides lowering your fat intake, you also increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids which has been shown to promote a healthy heart. Fish is the best source of omega-3 fatty acids and you don't have to eat fish every day to get a good benefit from it.

These oils are good sources of monounsaturated fat which is the best kind of fat because this kind of fat increases the good cholesterol (HDL) in your body and lowers the bad cholesterol (LDL).

Sometimes it may seem to be a long road to weight loss but the length of the road is not nearly as important as how smooth the road is. By making small, gradual changes to your eating habits, you will find your road can be smooth as well.

Health Guru : The Skinny on Legumes, Seeds and Nuts
Webmaster | 16. November 2007 @ 16:02

Beans, peas and lentels are in the legume family and are excellent food choices. Legumes are healthy complex carbohydrates, full of vitamins and minerals as well as fiber. They are a good source of protein, although they do not have all the amino acids (the building blocks of protein) that the body needs, so supplement your legumes with a variety of foods to get the complete protein your body needs.

Beans have also been shown to help lower the risk of Diabetes and heart disease. Eating a cup of cooked beans a day can lower your total cholesterol by up to 10% in 6 weeks, which decreases your risk of heart disease by 20%. The phytonutrients in beans also help lower the risk of cancer.

Canned beans will give you the much of the same benefits as dried beans, so if you dont like to cook your beans from scratch, canned beans are a good alternative.

Some people avoid beans because of the gas and bloating that beans cause. This can be avoided in several ways. First always soak your dried beans overnight, and then discard that water and replace it with fresh water before you cook the beans. If beans still cause you problems, you might try gradually increasing the amount of beans you eat over several week, to help your body adapt. You could also try the product Beano found in most stores. It works well for most people.

Seeds and nuts can also be an important source of healthy fiber, plus they are often satisfying and help control the appetite. Nuts and seeds are full of healthy unprocessed monosaturated fats as well.

You might also seriously consider adding bean and seed sprouts to your diet, if you dont eat them already. The nutritional content of sprouts is many times greater than the original seed or bean it sprouted from. Sprouts have the highest concentration of nutrition per calorie than any food. They are also known for their high enzyme activity, which is never surpassed in any other stage of plant growth.

Beans are almost always a good food choice, but one exception to this is soybeans. Although soy is a popular healthy additive to food today, originally the Chinese did not eat soybeans as they did other beans because they knew that soybeans contained harmful substances. Soybeans contain powerful enzyme inhibitors which block the action of the enzymes the body needs for protein digestion. Even cooking them does not get rid of these substances, which cause gas and bloating, as well as other very serious problems in the body, like cancer and blood clots.

The only soy products that do not cause these health problems are the traditional fermented soy products, such as tempeh, natto, miso and shoyu (tamari or soy sauce,) since the lengthy fermentation process seems to get rid of most of the harmful substances, and allow the soy to be easily digested. All other soy products should be avoided, and definitely not used as a replacement for meat in the diet.

Health Guru : Two Methods of Chicken Cut - Simply and Professionally
Webmaster | 15. November 2007 @ 16:02

There are two ways in which chickens or poultry can be cut up, one for home use and the other for professional use. The technique can be learned quite easily and it's a useful skill to have.

The advantages are that it is more economical to cut up chicken or poultry yourself than buying in portions, and you can cut the way you want them in any various combinations such as drumsticks with or without the thigh, or breasts with or with the wings, etc.

A key point to remember is to feel the joints when you have to sever sinews and cartilage. To cut through bones, ideally a serrated knife or poultry shears are used.

The method that is common and popular amongst home cooks is as follows:

Basically there are eight steps to cut up the chicken or poultry. Firstly, by using a large sharp knife, free the leg by carefully cutting the skin between the body and the leg. Cut through the skin as far as the joint, bending the leg outwards with the hand. Then twist the leg until the ball of the joint springs out. After that, cut through the joint, pressing lightly. Cut through the leg at the knee joint to separate the thigh from the drumstick. Separate the wing at the shoulder joint, cutting off a small part of the breast with it. Press quite firmly to split the collarbone and divide the back parallel to the backbone. Cut across the back at the middle point, breaking the backbone with short movements of the knife. Finally to separate the breasts, carefully cut left and right along the length of the breastbone.

The professional cooks have a different method of cutting up chickens or poulty and the following method is based on 1-3/4 pounds poultry, in order to achieve portions of equal size:

In eight steps, firstly make a cut approximately 3/8 inch deep across the back under the shoulder blades. Cut along the backbone at a right angle to this and remove the "chicken oysters", which is the tender part whose quality matches that of the breasts. Cut through the skin between the body and the leg. Spread out the leg and cut through the joint. Chop off the outermost section of each wing, cutting through the joint with a small chopper or large knife.

Remove the wings with some breast meat, along the breastbone and wishbone as far as the joint. To remove the breasts, first hold the chicken firmly by the wishbone and cut along the breastbone. Turn the carcass 180 degree, then loosen the breast from the front along the wishbone as far as the joint. Take off the breast, making a cut from the joint to the end of the breastbone.

The legs are left in one piece and the wing tips are removed, for the sake of appearance.

The number of individual pieces depends on the size of the chicken. You can use the remainder of the carcass to make stock, soups and sauces.

The two methods above are simple to master and whether you choose to cut your chickens simply or professionally, these are the correct methods to follow.

Health Guru : Begin By Eating Breakfast
Webmaster | 14. November 2007 @ 16:02

You have probably witnessed that eating a healthy breakfast can save you from cravings later during the day and can actually assist your effort in loosing the excess weight you have been carrying around for some time now. But, as time has lately been considered a luxury not many people have during the day and especially during a busy weekday morning, starting the day off with eating a healthy breakfast is now a lost nutritional practice. Between battling work problems and prepare ourselves for another demanding day, we have forgotten to pay attention to the most important meal of the day and usually try to find time to squeeze in a cup of milk or in best cases a whole bowl of cereals. The contemporary fast-paced world has directed people to become superheroes, managing double of even triple careers, but forgetting to manage their own daily food intake. If you think that your body is the only instrument you have to continue performing all the tasks you want, perhaps it is time to pay attention to its nutritional needs and fulfill them accordingly.

But it is more convincing to start our argument from the beginning. Millions of people who skip breakfast and have never invested time in researching the consequences of their act, usually wonder why do experts regard breakfast as the most important meal of the day and how come it is still the most important meal of the day, surpassing the nutritional value of a healthy lunch or even dinner. However, for millions others who do eat a healthy breakfast, their secret to good health lies within this first day's meal. So, it is vital for you to understand why eating breakfast is crucial for your overall heath. While you are sleeping, your body continues to perform its functions and thus consuming resources, but in a lower rate than when you are awake since your metabolism slows down to compensate for the decreased energy needs. After waking up in the morning, because your body does not have enough time to return to its normal state is still experiencing the decreased metabolism state which can be ceased with eating a healthy breakfast. That is actually why it has this particular name "break" the "fasting" process. Thus, a healthy breakfast will end the calorie conservation period and will allow your metabolism to increase to its normal levels. This is why when you actually eat in the morning you feel that your energy levels have increased and you are ready to begin your day's tasks. Moreover, for those of you who are dieting in order to loose weight, you should know that skipping breakfast will not save you from the calories you are trying to avoid. By deciding not to begin your day with a healthy intake, you are not allowing your body's metabolism to go back to its normal state and you actually loose a protein called "leptin" that has been discovered to keep your body working efficiently and thus loosing weight.

Since now you are familiar with the basics on metabolism and overnight fasting, you should concentrate on what your healthy breakfast should include. Avoid simple carbs and concentrate on consuming complex carbs, lean proteins and healthy fats. Whole wheat bread, cereals, white meats, eggs, low-fat dairy products, vegetables and fruits are excellent breakfast choices. Remember to eat small portions throughout the day, but not to exclude breakfast from your daily nutritional plan. Soon you will be grateful for waking up ten minutes earlier but at the end of the day you will have much more energy to spare and you will feel fitter and healthier all day long.

Health Guru : Insomnia Basics
Webmaster | 13. November 2007 @ 16:02

In laymens terms, Insomnia is a medical condition characterized by the patients inability to sleep or rest his/her mind for a reasonable time. The common symptoms include trouble falling asleep, waking up frequently at night and finding it difficult to go back to sleep again, waking up very early before dawn, or feeling non-refreshed even after an apparent 7-8 hrs sleep at night. The direct outcome of this condition is that the patients, during the day, will appear sleepy and fatigued, may have troubles concentrating or thinking clearly, and very often, behaves depressed and irritable. However, thanks to the developments happened in the medical domain, insomnia is completely curable now, the only important aspect being to diagnose the exact cause of insomnia with precision.

Types of Insomnia

Insomnia is classified into three types Transient, Acute (Short-Term) and Chronic. Transient Insomnia lasts from a single night to few weeks and after that everything will be normal. Sleeplessness caused due to a short term anxiety or jet-lag can be grouped under transient insomnia. If such sleeplessness occurs again and again, then that condition is referred to as intermittent.

Acute Insomnia lasts from three weeks to six months, but the patient experiences no symptoms or episodes after that. If sleeplessness occurs for at least three nights a week and the pattern continues to over a month or more, then it is considered to be Chronic Insomnia. It is the most severe form of insomnia one can get.

Insomnia can be primary or secondary. Primary insomnia is caused naturally and is in no way related to any health issue or disease. Secondary insomnia is the result of some medical condition such as asthma, cancer, arthritis - fear, stress, anxiety, medications, or a poor sleeping environment in one's bedroom (partner snoring or any other irritating sound or noise constantly disturbing the sleep).

Some other causes of insomnia include sleep apnea, parasomnia, mania, hypomania, gastroesophageal reflux disease etc. It can also be a symptom of an approaching depression or hyper-thyroidsm.

As mentioned earlier, insomnia may be the result of a variety of factors. Hence its treatment also includes diagnosing the exact cause of sleeplessness, and addressing the issue precisely. For example, if insomnia is caused due to some underlying mental illnesses, it must be cured before the patient could again able to sleep peacefully. In some cases, doctors may prescribe sleeping pills to bring back the sleep, but such a methodology is not advisable for longer periods. Relaxation therapy, meditation, acupuncture, aromatherapy, reconditioning, and sleep restriction techniques are also invariably suggested for insomnia, but its effectiveness may vary from person to person.

Health Guru : Make Sure Your Home Teeth Whitening Kit Has What It Takes To Get The Job Done!
Webmaster | 12. November 2007 @ 16:02

Many of the home teeth whitening products available today are a great value and can help give you the white and bright smile you desire. Be aware of these few points so that the product you order will actually do the job.

Although there are many products on the market today that claim to whiten stained teeth and remove discoloration, the reality is that the definition of "whiten" can mean anything from a single shade where you may not even notice the difference to a full teeth whitening make-over.

Your most effective home teeth whitening kit will have or use the following:

CARBAMIDE PEROXIDE - If a dental whitening system does not contain carbamide peroxide, you will not get the results you want in a timely manner. Carbamide peroxide is the whitening agent or active ingredient in most effective whitener gels.

Carbamide peroxide also comes in a variety of strengths from 10-22% with some as high in the lower 30% range. Although the higher the number, the more aggressive and stronger the product is, it also increases the risk of having sensitive teeth and discolored gums and soft tissue. A good product that also seems to be the most popular is the 16% area. This strength gives the speed we need to see faster results but at a safe level so as not to damage gums and teeth.

The AMOUNT of the gel product: This is where many people run into problems. All of us NATURALLY assume that more product the better, right? The problem however is that the amount of the product can be increased using a number of very cheap fillers and inactive ingredients. This means that more is needed to do the same job as a smaller amount of higher quality product. The key is to only buy from reputable companies and not simply look at the amount of the product offered. More product means less comfort while holding a mouthful of goo in your mouth while trying to use enough cheap gel to whiten your teeth. Ick! Get the good stuff and save yourself the hassle.

TEETH WHITENER TRAYS - For any whitening gel to work, it must be in contact with your teeth enamel. Tobacco stained teeth, or yellowed teeth need the gel product to touch the enamel to whiten and remove the staining.

Moldable trays come in two types. The first is similar to an athletic mouth guard where you heat it slightly in hot water then bite won leaving an impression of your teeth. This works and is effective but is not the most comfortable to place and hold in your mouth. If you're planning on keeping your teeth bright and stain free, you should consider the second type of bleaching tray.

This tray is a custom made teeth bleaching tray made from an impression of your mouth by a dental lab. Higher quality teeth bleaching kits provide material and instructions to make a mold of your teeth similar to the way a dentist might when creating a crown. The impressions are then sent to the lab where they make a custom fitted bleaching tray out of comfortable material. No worries because you can't mess it up. The process takes another step with the dental lab involved but the wait is well worth the effort.

In the end, the only way to make absolutely certain that you get the whitest teeth possible is to use high quality products.

Health Guru : Water Filtration and Ionization
Webmaster | 11. November 2007 @ 16:02

The body has been created in a delicate balance and when that balance is upset then a person can feel the effects in terms of infections, ailments or diseases of some kind. No person on earth enjoys suffering through any sort of ailment, but unfortunately we have all become accustomed to dealing with them since our body is constantly being unbalanced. This is due to the state of our immediate environment in which we exist, and the deterioration of this is believed to be a major factor in why there is an increase of sickness in people in general. This has lead to a rise in the awareness that people have of the state of their health and how it is linked to what they eat and drink as well as the state of their immediate environment.

This awareness has lead to the belief that the state of the water that you drink can either help your body to counteract the effects of eating food that is bad for your body or can augment those effects. The majority of the negative effects that can be felt by the body as a result of the processing that an item of food can undergo before it is provided to you and the same is true for beverages. The water that you get in your home can have negative effects on your body which may cause augment the negative effects that overly processed food can cause within your body. In order for the water that you drink at home to provide you with the positive effects that are possible you can take the healthy water purification route, plus go a further step by ionizing your water which can affect the composition of the water to make it more beneficial.

The use of an appliance that can perform the ionization process, such as one of the Jupiter water ionizer models can provide you with great benefits in a variety of ways. This is due to the alteration of the water's composition after it has undergone the ionization process which can include becoming more alkaline as a result of that process. This is reported to help increase its ability to hydrate the body, thereby countering another problem that many people face today and that is dehydration. The fact that the more toxins are in the water the more water is needed to flush them out of the system, which can lead to a vicious cycle and worsen the dehydration.

The use of an appliance like the Jupiter water ionizer can help to halt that cycle before it affects your body even more than it has currently. This is due to the fact that the water that it produces has been filtered to eliminate the toxins that were in the water. This means that the toxins that are currently in the body can be filtered out by the water without additional toxins being introduced into the body. This allows the body to have sufficient water to perform all the functions for which it is needed including regulating the body temperature and lubricating the joints.

Health Guru : Why Constipation Is Too Dangerous To Ignore
Webmaster | 10. November 2007 @ 16:02

There is probably no condition that goes untreated as often as constipation. Nor is there any condition that occurs with greater overall frequency than constipation. While the symptoms of constipation are relatively mild and tend to be limited to: difficulty passing stool, hard or dry stool, and infrequent bowel movements. In more severe cases, constipation may also include nausea, severe abdominal or lower back pain, and even bloody stool.

Constipation is a very common condition because it can be caused by a large number of factors. In the vast majority of cases, poor diet and a lack of physical exercise are thought to be the cause of the constipation-and where not the actual cause, at least contributing factors. Dairy products, greasy foods, alcohol, and caffeine are just a few of the products we consume that can lead to constipation problems. Chronic constipation is a real possibility when improper nutrition and poor lifestyle have been consistent issues.

Common Constipation Causes

While chronic constipation problems are usually the result of poor diet and lifestyle, temporary constipation can be caused by a host of factors. A heavy night of drinking can cause dehydration which will result in hard, dry stool. A new pain medication or antidepressant may also lead to regularity problems. Stress is a huge cause of constipation and one of the big reasons for its frequency. Simply withholding bowel movements (a common cause of childhood constipation) can lead to infrequency. But, while all of these things and more may lead to temporary constipation, the good news is that it will go away once the cause has been addressed. It is chronic constipation problems that are the real cause for concern as they can be a sign of a much larger and potentially more dangerous medical issue.

Medical Conditions That Cause Constipation

Chronic constipation is a problem in and of itself because it can cause bacteria and toxins to build up in the body because stool is not being evacuated from the body. In time, these bacteria will spread throughout the body via the blood stream and cause infections and other medical problems. Septicemia may result so that the entire body is fighting infections in multiple locations and death may be possible unless antibiotics can help the immune system regain control. Aside from this, chronic constipation is a problem because it often signals the presence of another medical issue.

Diabetes is a condition where the body is unable to properly regulate blood glucose levels via insulin. A side effect of diabetes is dehydration which then leads to the constipation which is often present with diabetes. Proper treatment will reduce the blood glucose spikes and reduce dehydration but it may still be necessary to hydrate more than normal to prevent constipation problems from arising.

In addition to diabetes, there are a number of neurological conditions that cause constipation problems. Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease, strokes, and spinal cord injuries have all been known to cause constipation. But unlike diabetes where the constipation is caused by dehydration, this is not the case with neurological disorders. Instead, the constipation arises due to the brain not sending the right signals to muscles in the intestines and gastrointestinal tract.

In order for the body to have normal bowel movements, Peristaltic Action is necessary. Peristaltic Action is the natural movement within the body that pushes food from the stomach into the intestines. Afterwards, the action pushes the waste from the intestines through the colon and out the rectum. When signals from the brain are not sent or received properly, Peristaltic Action will not occur properly and constipation is the result. Even though the medications to treat neurological disorders may aid in the transmission of the signals, they may still cause constipation due to dehydration.

Chronic constipation, however, is most often the result of poor diet or a blockage in the gastrointestinal tract. A blockage, or fecal impaction, is caused when the feces that clings to the walls of the colon and intestines builds up to the point of causing an obstruction. When this occurs, waste will not pass beyond the fecal impaction and pressure will begin to build on the abdomen and lower back. If the waste is not evacuated from the body in a timely fashion, the blood stream will begin to reabsorb the bacteria present in the waste. This will lead to a general weakening of the entire immune system and leave your body susceptible to infection and disease. If the blockage is not removed and too much waste backs up, a massive infection will begin to rage in the body and a person will develop septicemia. Death is a very real possibility once septicemia has begun.

Eating a diet rich in fiber will help prevent the onset of chronic constipation. Fiber helps add bulk to stool while also drawing water into the gastrointestinal tract and softening stool in the process. Fiber will help keep the gastrointestinal tract clear but it will not help remove the feces clinging to the sides of the colon and intestines. Therefore, the potential for future blockages and chronic constipation remain.

One of the surest ways to reduce chances for future blockages is to periodically employ a colon cleanser. A colon cleanser will not only eliminate current blockages, it will also help prevent future ones as well. This is because a colon cleanser will also help remove the feces clinging to the walls and thus reduce chances for future fecal impactions. However, it is important to remember that the colon cleanser should be made with all natural ingredients. Colon cleansers that are not made will all natural ingredients may contain harsh chemicals that may lead to dehydration or other harmful side effects.

While short term constipation will always be a factor that people have to contend with, it is generally not severe and tends to go away once the cause has been addressed. Chronic constipation may be the signal of a more serious medical condition like diabetes or the result of a fecal impaction. Because it is much more likely a fecal impaction causing the problem, it is important to eat a diet rich in fiber and to use an all natural colon cleanser periodically to prevent chronic constipation and the build up of bacteria that can cause more serious health problems.

Health Guru : Hypertension A Silent Killer
Webmaster | 9. November 2007 @ 16:02

Hypertension in its simplest sense means high blood pressure. Medical science calls this condition, "arterial hypertension", but hidden beneath the apparent simplicity of the term is the face of a silent killer. This silent killer can invariably trigger a heart attack, stroke, arterial aneurysm, eye damage, or a complete renal failure out of the blue, and no one will have any hint or clue that something was boiling inside for a worst outcome. Hence it is important that hypertension be diagnosed and treated at the earliest, before things get out of hand.

The important question is how to find out if a person is suffering from arterial hypertension. The biggest roadblock in diagnosing hypertension is the virtual absence of any solid symptom as it may normally be called a characteristic of high blood pressure. In other words, a person, even if suffering from hypertension, may not show any apparent symptoms. Every thing will look normal and the person may be as cheerful and healthy as a child. It is only when something happens that one might take note of the developments. In some cases unfortunately, things might have gone to the anvil by then.

Of course that does not mean that all types of hypertension are without any symptoms. Severe cases of hypertension may be accompanied with headache, sleeplessness, dizziness, and in a worse case, coma. In such instances, diagnosis will be a lot easier and quick, but again timely treatment is very crucial.

On the basis of the causes leading to hypertension, this medical condition can be classified into primary hypertension - or essential hypertension - and secondary hypertension. The causes for primary hypertension are mostly unknown. And to make matters even more complex, it is such cases that are reported the most. On the other hand, secondary hypertension will have some definite underlying causes, which in most cases may be a medical issue such as alcohol abuse, endocrine tumors, hormonal problems or kidney disorders. Again, if the exact causes are known, hypertension can be treated and contained easily, but it will be more of a gamble in the other cases.

Treatments for Hypertension

The treatments for hypertension mostly include a mix of medication and a disciplined lifestyle. Here it must be noted that none of this will work if taken independently. Someone with hypertension needs to follow the prescriptions punctually meanwhile adopting a health lifestyle marked by a controlled diet and regular workout/physical exercise.

Finally, one must also realize that an existing issue of hypertension could be aggravated by activities like smoking, drinking, and medicines containing steroids. Therefore, take care to avoid such things as well from ones daily activities.

After all, remember the age old adage that health is wealth!

Health Guru : Sciatica - Understanding the Basics
Webmaster | 8. November 2007 @ 16:02

Sciatica is a relatively common condition which is characterized by sharp pains in the leg and trouble moving. The most important thing to do when you are suffering from sciatica is to rest in bed but there are other treatments available as well.

The main cause of sciatica is slipped disks. This will generally affect the nerves in the limbs but it is the pressure on some of the nerves toward the back of the leg that causes most of the discomfort. This pressure causes sharp, stabbing pain which may come on suddenly or may develop gradually. This pain will become recurrent if the disks do not heal correctly

The vertebral or spinal disks separate the vertebrae and are made of tissue with a soft centre. This acts as a shock absorber and allows the vertebrae to be flexible so that people can bend and stretch. Sometimes, excessive back strain or even age, can weaken the outer layer of the disk, causing the soft centre to bulge and put pressure on the nerve to the leg, causing the pain associated with sciatica.

The first indicator of a slipped disk is the presence of lower back pain which may happen suddenly when bending or it may happen gradually during a period of hard work. As the disk places pressure on the spinal nerves, it creates a sharp pain that is felt in the buttock and the back of the thigh. As the condition worsens, the slightest movement such as coughing may bring on or intensify the pain. Sitting for long periods can become painful as the nerves become stretched and thereby intensify the irritation.

A person with severe sciatica may find it difficult to walk as any movement causes the pain to reappear or to become worse. Often, the only comfort for the sufferer is to lie on his or her back with the knees bent to relieve the pressure on the nerves. Sciatica caused by a slipped disk will usually improve if bed rest is undertaken.

It is now routine for health care specialists to advise two weeks of continuous bed rest with the knees and hips flexed and with weight traction to the pelvic region. If this treatment does not reduce the herniation of the disk, surgery may be needed.

As well as bed rest, painkillers may be prescribed though ordinary analgesics such as aspirin may be adequate. It is crucial to stay in bed until the disk is fully healed. To give in to the temptation to get up before this happens can be appealing but to do so will return the process to square one.

Usually, surgery is only used as a last resort. This can sometimes happen when the person has had a number of episodes where bed rest has not improved the condition. It may also be used for those who cannot take lengthy periods of time off work. However, not all disk problems are operable. Only the doctor can decide, through the use of X-rays, whether the particular condition is suitable for surgery and also the extent of surgery.

Health Guru : Healthy Grocery Shopping
Webmaster | 7. November 2007 @ 16:02

Healthy grocery shopping is a critical part of eating healthy to lose weight. Choosing healthy foods to eat instead of high fat foods can benefit you in so more ways than just losing weight.

Eating healthy can affect the way you look and feel every minute of every day.

When you shop for healthy foods to eat, there are a few basic things that can make it a little easier. Here are a few healthy grocery shopping tips.

1. Never go grocery shopping on an empty stomach. It's obvious that all food looks better when you are hungry. But you can make better choices if you don't shop when you are hungry. Another benefit to this is you will spend less.

2. Select canned fruits and tuna that are packed in water, not oil or syrup. Anything packed in water including fruit in its own juice is a much healthier choice.

3. Look at the labels for the words "hydrogenated" or "partially hydrogenated". The earlier you see them appear on the label list, the higher the amount of unhealthy trans fatty acids the food will contain.

4. Don't buy turkey or chicken with the skin on it. If you are eating healthy to lose weight, breast or white meat is a much healthier food to eat. The skin is really all fat and not very healthy food to eat.

5. When you select frozen dinners, select those that are not only low in fat, but low in sodium and cholesterol as well. Salt makes you retain water and can increase your blood pressure.

6. If you aren't consuming enough dairy products or they don't agree with you, buy calcium fortified orange juice instead. Getting enough calcium is an important part of eating healthy.

7. Buy whole grain breads, cereals, and rolls. Healthy breads are whole wheat, pumpernickel or seven-grain. Healthy cereal choices are All-Bran, Bran Buds, 100% Bran and Raisin Bran.

8. You may want to give cantaloupe a try. With just 95 calories, half of the melon will provide more than a day's supply of Vitamin C and cancer-fighting beta carotene.

9. Don't be tricked into buying yogurt covered by nuts or raisins, on top because they are normally loaded with sugar and partially hydrogenated oils. If you are eating healthy to lose weight, this could make the difference of you losing weight for the week or not.

10. Buy low fat snacks and treats, such as pretzels, ginger snaps, and angel food cake. Make sure you can grab these low fat snacks when you get the need to munch on something.

There are many different healthy foods you can buy at the grocery store, and all it takes is making the right choices to put in your cart.

Healthy grocery shopping can quickly be learned and become a way of life with you. The reward is huge because taking weight off and keeping it off now becomes easy.

Health Guru : Increase Muscle And Lose Fat By Doing Pilates
Webmaster | 6. November 2007 @ 16:02

Pilates is a body fitness system that was developed in the twentieth century by J Pilates. He named the method The Art of Contrology, which references the way the motions promotes the use of the mind to control the muscles. It is an exercise system that centres on the core postural muscles that help keep the body balanced and are essential to providing support for the spine.

Pilates can aid in losing weight by toning your body and conditioning your muscles. Large people that need to lose weight may find it to be a great alternative to regular conditioning classes at the local gym.

There are 2 ways of doing pilates. Either on a mat on the floor or you can use the reformer machine. Both techniques requires trained pilates instructors to teach you individually or as part of a larger group.

This type of pilates exercise is great for older people as well as improving balance and flexibility and also great if you have arthritis or any other joint immobility problems.

In pilates exercises a totally new awareness is discovered while using the body mind connection to be able to perform the movement properly. The movements focus on strengthening the powerhouse muscle groups: your lower back, abdomen and buttocks and help you tone and lose weight in these areas as well.

The best part of all is that whatever your current fitness level or your muscle strength, any normal person can do pilates. It is a very safe method of exercise. The movements are based upon dance and yoga exercises and emphasises body alignment as well as body awareness the same way dance exercises do.

To keep your muscles flexible is of great importance if you are overweight. The more lean muscle mass of your total body composition you have, the more fat mass you will burn on a daily basis. If you don't have the discipline to workout by yourself and lift weights to keep your muscle mass from disappearing completely, pilates is a great alternative.

If money is the option, mixing both might be what would fit your budget and your schedule to tone and shape your body effectively. Pilates is not for anybody who is trying to build size or increase muscle mass in any larger volume. Pilates is usually performed over hour long sessions.

Health Guru : Tuberculosis, a Cause for Concern?
Webmaster | 5. November 2007 @ 16:02

Despite advances in treatments available, tuberculosis (TB) still remains a global pandemic. One third the human population is currently infected with tuberculosis. What is tuberculosis?

The disease tuberculosis is caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Tuberculosis can affect any part of the body but usually infects the lungs. Tuberculosis is spread through airborne droplets occurring when an infected individual sneezes, talks, or coughs. However, prolonged exposure to the infected individual must occur before you may become infected. The body may harbor the bacteria while the immune system prevents sickness. For this reason, there are two forms of TB: latent tuberculosis and active tuberculosis.

With latent tuberculosis, the immune system is able to prevent the bacteria from growing. The tuberculosis bacteria remain alive within the body but are inactive at this time. However, the bacteria can become active later in life. Those with latent tuberculosis have no symptoms, do not feel sick, are not contagious, and may develop TB later in life if they do not receive treatment.

Active tuberculosis simply means that the tuberculosis bacteria are growing within the body causing an active infection. Signs and symptoms of active tuberculosis include fatigue, slight fever, chills, night sweats, loss of appetite, unintended weight loss, a cough that lasts three or more weeks producing discolored or bloody sputum, and pain with coughing or breathing. Active tuberculosis is highly contagious.

What is causing the tuberculosis pandemic? Improved public health programs have helped to create a steady decline of tuberculosis cases in the United States. However, the problem is far from solved. Factors that contribute to the spread of tuberculosis in the U.S. and elsewhere include the increase in number of foreign born nationals, crowded living conditions, increase in drug resistant strains of tuberculosis, lack of access to medical care, and the increase in poverty.

Poorly ventilated and crowded conditions help to spread TB. This is one reason tuberculosis cases have reached epidemic proportions. Although the incidence of TB cases in the U.S. is declining, the incidence in other parts of the world is increasing. Half of the reported cases in the U.S. (in 2000) occurred in individuals that were born outside of the U.S. Individuals that live in poverty, move or migrate often usually do not finish the tuberculosis treatment. This is leading to drug resistant forms of tuberculosis.

Drug resistant strains of tuberculosis are a serious problem. Tuberculosis bacteria have developed strains of the bacteria that are resistant to each of the major tuberculosis medications. There are also strains of tuberculosis that are resistant to at least two tuberculosis medications. This multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) is posing an even deadlier threat to those affected. Individuals affected with MDR-TB are much more difficult to treat requiring a long term therapy of up to two years. The medications required to treat these strains can cause serious side effects. This is one great reason to complete the entire course of medication as prescribed by your doctor.

Certain factors increase your risk of contracting tuberculosis. An individual in an immunocompromised state is at risk of developing TB. A number of factors can cause the immune system to be in a weakened state. Some diseases can suppress the immunity such as diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and silicosis. Certain medications can affect the bodys immune system which includes chemotherapy drugs and corticosteroids. An increased risk of reactivated tuberculosis has been associated with the use of arthritis medications Enbrel and Remicade.

Individuals within close proximity of those infected with tuberculosis are at an increased risk of developing disease. Individuals in areas of high rates of tuberculosis (Asia, Africa, Latin America, former Soviet Union) have an increased risk of developing tuberculosis. Certain races (Hispanics, American Indians, Asian Americans, African Americans) in the U.S. are at risk of developing tuberculosis. What other factors may increase your risk of developing tuberculosis?

The older adult is at an increased risk of developing tuberculosis due to a weakened immune system. Individuals who are malnourished, lack adequate medical care, or who suffer from long term drug or alcohol abuse are at increased risk of developing tuberculosis. Health care workers are at increased risk of developing tuberculosis also.

If you develop any of the signs or symptoms listed above, you should seek medical advice. Individuals with HIV should be tested for tuberculosis, since the leading cause of death in the AIDS patient is tuberculosis. HIV and tuberculosis have a deadly symbiosis, in which TB increases the rate at which the AIDS virus replicates and HIV reactivates inactive TB. Health care workers are usually tested at least yearly for tuberculosis by Mantoux test. Individuals with latent tuberculosis reveal a positive Mantoux even though no symptoms of the disease are evident. Tuberculosis is also tested by chest x-ray and culture tests (urine, sputum).

Tuberculosis is a preventable disease. There are a few measures one can take to protect their health. First, you should be tested regularly. If you have an immune suppressing disease, live or work in a prison or nursing home, were born in a TB prevalent country, or have other risk factors, then a Mantoux test should be done every six months.

If you test positive without symptoms, speak with your doctor about treatments to reduce the risk of developing active tuberculosis. The most important step you can do for the public and yourself is to finish the entire course of medication. Treatment that is stopped to early allows the bacteria a chance to mutate to a drug resistant form.

Health Guru : Back Pain Treatment: Variety Of Options Available
Webmaster | 4. November 2007 @ 16:02

Back pain is occurred due to various causes and in 90% of the back pain cases, the pain disappears easily by various back pain treatment. However, proper medical advice and treatment is essential in cases where the pain persists for a long time.

Back pain treatment is effective if the exact cause is identified. The severity of back pain may vary from a dull ache to searing feeling. It may be due a strain in the muscles or an injury or problems like Osteoarthritis, arthritis, bone fracture or tumor or some infection. Although back pain may emerge suddenly, it may be caused by a problem, which has plagued us for a long time. It is essential that we identify the true cause of the back pain, if we want to eliminate or treat it fully.

A number of back pain treatment options are available for people suffering from back pain. However, the treatment may vary from person to person depending on the cause or the reason for the back pain. The exact nature of the pain and its severity can be judged by a specialist who will than suggest the most appropriate treatment.

Exercising is the best back pain treatment. It is a general notion that bed rest is the best cure for back pain. But evidence has shown that rest does not aid in the recovery of a person suffering from Back pain. It is much better if one carries on with normal activities while taking some measures for relieving the pain. The most recommended exercises for curing back pain are short walks, stretching exercises and swimming. However, it is advisable that one starts slowly and than gradually builds up the speed at which the various exercises are undertaken.

Application of a cold pack or a bag of ice to the back is also often recommended by the doctors. This form of back pain treatment is generally used within the first 48 hours after the start of the back pain. A cold pack is generally applied for 5-10 minutes. Ice reduces the inflammation and swelling, numbs soft tissues, and slows nerve impulses in the injured area.

A large number of drugs are also used as back pain treatment that reduce the pain and are easily available in the market. However, many of them can have serious side effects and so should be taken only after consulting a physician. Several non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen, Naproxen, Ketoprofen are capable of reducing pain. These anti-inflammatory medications help in reducing the swelling and inflammation while healing the injured portion. Acute or chronic back pain may be treated by an anticonvulsant or an oral steroid.

Steroid injections are also effective in reducing the inflammation and the treatment of back pain caused by spinal stenosis, disc herniation, and degenerative disc disease. A steroid is injected directly into the membrane that surrounds the nerve roots (dura).

Other forms of back pain treatment include the massage therapy, the electrotherapy and the adjustment of the spine Chiropractors and osteopaths. Acupuncture may also prove to be effective in some cases. Finally surgery may be recommended in cases where the pain is not curable by any of the other forms of treatment.

Health Guru : Avoiding a Wine Hangover
Webmaster | 3. November 2007 @ 16:02

We've all been there. Those times in our lives when we swear that alcohol will never again touch our lips. These instances usually happen in the early mornings, with the cracks from the bathroom linoleum digging into our knees and our contact lenses glued to our eyeballs as if holding on for dear life, afraid that the heaves of our stomachs will cause them to fall out.

With alcohol freely flowing - booze oozing out of bottles, people professing their love for each other, glasses of wine practically filling themselves up - it's easy to forget the hangover that awaits in the coming hours. Lurking in the bathroom, hiding beneath the sink or behind a closed shower curtain, this hangover is sure to pop into ours lives anytime we play the role of the unsuspecting partier, leaving us to swear off drinking for life or longer.

Though everything has a price, and a hangover may very well be the price we pay for a wild night out, drinking wine does not always have to cost you in the form of a hangover. Taking some precautions can mean the difference between feeling fine and shooting a beady eyed glare in the direction of every bottle in your wine cellar.

Drink Water

Alcohol dehydrates you, which is why the next day is met with a headache and the ability to drink three bottles of soda, five liters of water, and a pot of coffee without ever having to pee. The best way to thwart this is to drink a glass of water for every glass of wine you drink. While wine does contain water, the alcohol in the wine trumps the water's affect, disallowing you to utilize duality and count a glass of wine as both water and alcohol. Drinking a glass of water for every glass of wine will keep you hydrated, decreasing the chances of a rough morning.

Eat Before

Drinking on an empty stomach may seem like a good idea. As the sensation of wine glides down your esophagus, setting up residence by itself in your stomach and making you feel giddier than it would setting up residence next to a five course meal, drinking on empty can cause you to run out of gas in hangover Hell. Eating about an hour before going out drinking, however, helps to absorb the alcohol, keeping you from getting too drunk, too quickly. While you don't need to eat everything in sight, eating a meal containing bread or pasta is a good way to arm yourself with a hangover deterrent.

Don't Mix with Prescription Drugs

Several prescription drugs contain a label that says, "This medicine will increase the affects of alcohol." While some people may look at this and see it as a way to save money at the bars, taking a few pills and generating a virtual two for one deal is probably not the best way to save a buck. Prescription pills and alcohol can be a dangerous combination and when your body is met with a dangerous combination, it fights back, doing all it can to kick any dangerous substances out of your system. This can only lead to wilder than intended night, and a morning full of mourning.

Know When to Say When

Though a saying usually equated with drinking and driving, knowing when to say when is also applicable to drinking in general. Even if you drink plenty of water, eat on a full stomach, and lay off prescription drugs, drinking huge amounts of wine can still cause you to get sick. When wine is flowing smoothly, it's easy to keep drinking without realizing the amount of alcohol you are actually consuming. Because the human brain has a late reaction to alcohol, you may be getting extremely drunk without immediately feeling inebriated. It's best to drink slowly, pacing yourself to avoid that one moment where you rise from your chair and realize, three drinks to late, that you've consumed far too much. Drink in moderation and remind those around you that friends don't let friends get hangovers.

Obviously, the full proof way of avoiding a hangover is to not drink at all. But, there's no fun in that; the fact that the Great Depression was preceded by a decade without alcohol is no coincidence. We all want the ability to eat, drink, and be merry. And we all want a glass of wine to savor. By simply being proactive in your drinking, you should be able to avoid regret the morning after. And you should be able to avoid the realization of why, when it comes down to it, a hangover is really just two four letter words.

Health Guru : Natural Health-Body Detoxification: Is it Necessary?
Webmaster | 2. November 2007 @ 16:02

Everyday, people are exposed to various toxins, which harm the body and cause serious diseases. These toxins can be internal toxins that are released in the body as a by-product of normal metabolic activity; or external toxins such as heavy metals (lead, aluminum etc), smoke, drugs (cocaine, steroids etc), food preservatives and additives, alcohol, chemicals, harmful organic compounds etc. The list is practically endless, which is why the process of body detoxification assumes vital proportions.

Body detoxification refers to the ability of the human body to rid itself of harmful toxins. The body performs the detoxification process through four main organs, which are:

* The Kidneys
* The Liver
* The Skin
* The Intestines

All toxins in your blood, whether internal or external, reach your liver before they reach any other part of the body. The liver then acts upon these toxins and removes them through the bile and kidneys. Some water soluble toxins may escape the liver detoxification, but these are then eliminated through the kidneys. Your skin too helps in the process of body detoxification by eliminating toxins through sweat and skin rashes.

Thus, the natural body detoxification process generally ensures that all the toxins are removed from the body. However, in recent times, natural body detoxification processes may not be very efficient in removing all the harmful toxins from the body, due to several reasons such as:

* Sluggish detoxification enzymes in the body.

* Presence of too many toxins in the modern world.

* Poor nutrition and unhealthy diets. *Increased constipation.

* Loss of equilibrium of bowel flora.

* Presence of beta-glucuronidase, which is an enzyme that reverses the detoxification process, thus leading to an increase in the amounts of bodily toxins.

Webmaster | 1. November 2007 @ 16:02
Snoring is an involuntary act of producing sound while sleeping, which can even disturb the domestic harmony. Snoring is a common phenomenon that is experienced by more than 50 % of adult and in addition to the serious disturbance for the bed mate, snoring can also cause serious medical complications such as sleep apnea, which result obstruction to breathing while sleeping. Sleep apnea enhances the risk of life threatening disorders such as hypertension, stroke and cardiac arrest in adults, whereas in children, it may lead to attention deficit disorder.<br /> <br /> Snoring is actually the sound resulted by the vibration of the soft palate and uvula, while the breathing through mouth. Depending on the specialties of the mouth anatomy, the flapping sound may differ, and as a result snoring sound ranges from feeble soft sounds to deep unpleasant roaring sound. Mouth breathing, instead of nasal breathing, due to any nasal obstruction, is the primary reason for snoring. The blockages in mouth such as thick palate, throat tissue, tongue falling to mouth, mis-positioned jaw, and allergies can result snoring. The lifestyle disorders such as alcohol addition and obesity also increases the chances for snoring. The structural significances such as deformities, long palate and uvula, large tonsils and adenoids, enhance the sound of snoring. Snoring can be considerably decreased by practicing certain self help treatments. Primarily, try to sleep on your side rather than on your back, since sleeping on your back induces mouth breathing. Use a pillow to raise the head and keep a pillow on your side, to remain the sleeping position on side. Avoid alcohol and other sleep disturbing addictions to impart a good sleep. Practice ideal sleep hygiene habits for a comfortable sleep. It is very interesting that around 300 different snoring controlling devices are patented although most of the oral and mandible devices are focused to induce nasal breathing and to thereby control snoring. In cases of serious snoring problem, the consultation of a physician must not be delayed, as it leads to life threatening issues. The otolaryngologist will undertake a detailed check up of all the participating organs in the process such as nose, mouth, throat, palate, neck and ear, to find out the exact underling cause for snoring. The treatment will be finalized according to the reason found in the diagnosis. Surgery is recommended in case of structural deformities and obstructions in air passages. The new treatment strategies to control snoring include Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, Genioglossus Tongue Advancement Surgery, Thermal Ablation Palatoplasty and its latest advancements such as Laser Assisted Uvula Palatoplasty. Continuous positive airway pressure is another effective method, which is a mask that regulates the free passage of air, without snoring. Snoring, a social and medical nuisance, can be reduced by adopting ideal sleeping practices and if necessary, through medical assistance.
